ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Travelers without a REAL ID or passport may soon face an $18 fee to pass through airport security.
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) proposed this new rule for those lacking required identification, according to a notice posted on Thursday.
I spoke with people at the airport to gather their reactions. Answers varied by age, with younger people against it while older people considered it a reasonable cost.
“I think it’s kind of ridiculous cause some people don’t have the documents to get a real ID,” said Amber Swaney.
Jimmy, who first saw the news on TikTok, expressed concern.
“I was a little, kind of blown away like I feel like 18 bucks just to get on a flight like I feel like that’s too little of security,” he said.
The TSA says the money would go towards funding new identity verification technology. Travelers without a REAL ID could join a program allowing them to use a biometric kiosk to pass through security. The non-refundable fee would cover a 10-day period.
In a statement, a TSA spokesperson said this is the “next step in the process in REAL ID compliance.”
With Monroe County DMV offices closing every Friday through February, getting a REAL ID may take longer. Travelers are advised to make an appointment or use a passport for travel.
News10NBC reached out to the TSA for more information on when the fee will take effect. The agency said it will announce further details in the coming days.
