ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Robert DeLorme, a sixth grader at the Aquinas Institute of Rochester, is being honored for stepping in to help after one of his friends was considering taking their own life.
His story highlights the importance of mental health. Back in March, Robert heard one of his friends talking about taking their own life. He learned the student was having trouble at home. Robert listened to his friend and got his friend help from a mental health counselor.
“I know most of his family and he’s like one of my best friends and it would feel good just to know he’s fine,” Robert said.
Here’s a little more of Robert’s back story. His sister died unexpectedly in her sleep last year, just before her 10th birthday. That’s when his family created the Giselle Delorme Heart of Kindness Foundation, with a goal to provide resources to families in crisis. That’s exactly what Robert did for one of his classmates.

Any student in grades K-12 in a Monroe County school is eligible for a nomination. The good deed must have occurred within one year of the nomination. Anyone over 18 years of age can submit a nomination form, including family, friends, school staff, and coaches.
