Seven teams gathered for the opening night of the Mizzou Invite in Columbia. Host team Missouri came away with seven of a potential 12 wins in the water on night one.

Opening up the session, Missouri’s women’s 200 freestyle relay got off to a hot start, topping the final times in 1:29.16. Over a second and a half ahead of runners-up Florida International in 1:30.84. FIU was challenged for that 3rd-place spot by the Wyoming women, who finished just three hundredths behind in 1:30.87.

The tiger men followed suit, winning the 200 free relay by over two full seconds. Luke Nebrich swam his fastest ever 50 free to open up for Missouri, clocking 18.75, bettering his 19.02 from SECs last season.

The women’s 100 butterfly top 3 were separated by less than four-tenths of a second. Missouri’s Paige Striley (52.47), FIU’s Pauline Zeller (52.65), and Missouri’s Kylee Sullivan (52.84) separated themselves from the pack, finishing as the only three women under 54 seconds. For Striley, her time is less than two-tenths off her best from SECs last year at 52.29. Zeller demolished her best time from just under three weeks ago in 53.87.

Carter Ruthven notched the win in the men’s 100 fly for Southern Illinois. Ruthven narrowly edged out Jan Zubik of Missouri by .16, clocking 46.37 for the individual win. Missouri finished with 5 in the top 8 in the event. Ruthven destroyed his best time from just a week ago at the SIU A3 Invite, where he swam 47.12.

Missouri’s Zoe Schneider came away with the win in the 400 IM, lowering her lifetime best from SECs last season in 4:14.22, finishing just .77 over Nicole Frank of FIU.

Missouri continued to impress in the men’s 400 IM, Matthew Mortenson logged another Tiger win, and in his fastest time of his career, clocking the 1.3-second win in 3:43.01, over three seconds faster than his previous best from the Mizzou Qualifier in March.

Tara Joyce of Wyoming ran away with the women’s 200 free, turning in the fastest time of the evening in 1:45.35, nearly two seconds faster than the next closest competitor in Avery Dillon of TCU in 1:47.24.

McKendree entered the win column with Vova Gavrysh’s dominating swim in the men’s 200 free, clocking 1:32.73, giving him over a second of a buffer between him and the field. The swim bested his fastest ever performance by nine-tenths of a second from last season’s NCAA Division II Championships.

Southern Illinois’ Olivia Herron took the tight win over Frida Loebersli’s 59.60 (FIU) in the women’s 100 breast, outsplitting Loebersli by nearly eight tenths coming home to snag the win in 59.42.

Missouri got back to the top in the men’s 100 breast, leading a 1-2-3 sweep with Brady Johnson (52.37), Logan Ottke (52.47), and Darden Tate (53.59) rounding out the top three spots. Those swims stand as Johnson’s and Ottke’s fastest ever performances.

In the final women’s event of the evening, Missouri once again touched first, this time in the 400 medley relay, clocking 3:33.94 to take the near three-second win. Zara Zallen closed out the relay with her 47.98 anchor leg.

The Tiger men replicated the success, overwhelming the field by three and a half seconds. The team of Quinlan Gould (45.97), Brady Johnson (51.48), Jan Zubik (45.80), and Luke Nebrich (41.34) put a 3:04.59 stamp on day one of action in Columbia.
