Scholtz swam 1:49.59 to beat his teammate Nate Germonprez (1:49.80), leading a 1-2-3-4 for a rejuvenated Texas breaststroke group that also had a big performance on Wednesday in the 100.
Scholtz broke the old SEC Record of 1:49.71 set by Germonprez at last year’s NCAA Championship meet. Prior to that, the record was a 1:50.02 set by Florida’s Aleksas Savickas at last year’s SEC Championship meet.
Savickas clocked a 1:53.86 on Thursday at the Georgia Fall Invitational.
Ironically, Scholtz didn’t break the Texas school record. That belongs to Will Licon, who swam 1:47.91 at the 2017 NCAA Championships when Texas was still a member of the Big 12. Also faster is Caspar Corbeau, who swam 1:49.15 at the 2023 NCAA Championships. Texas joined the SEC last season.
This is a rare event where the SEC, one of the best conferences in college swimming, doesn’t have a swimmer in the top 10 of the all-time rankings. Scholtz now ranks 14th all-time in the event; Germonprez’s best time ranks him 15th.
The swim was a huge breakout for Scholtz, now with the benefit of training in arguably the best breaststroke group in the NCAA. His best time coming into the meet was a 1:51.04 from last year’s SEC Championship meet.
Scholtz’s improvement curve:
