NBA Drama: Lakers Fires Two Members of Buss Family as New Ownership Makes Changes ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

There is never a boring day in the NBA.

ESPN’s Shams Charania broke some surprising news on Thursday afternoon, sharing that the Los Angeles Lakers have fired two members of the Buss family. Joey and Jesse, two of Jerry’s four sons, will no longer hold their respective front office positions. Each has held a scouting role with the franchise over the last decade.

Charania shared a statement from the two brothers regarding the organization’s change:

“We are extremely honored to have been part of this organization for the last 20 seasons. Thank you to Laker Nation for embracing our family every step of the way. We wish things could be different with the way our time ended with the team. At times like this we wish we could ask our Dad what he would think about it all.”

The Buss family had served as the majority owners ever since 1979, turning the Lakers into one of the league’s most successful brands both on and off the court.

Los Angeles Lakers Move on From Two Members of Buss Family

The decision comes a little over five months after the Buss family, led by Jeanie, sold the franchise in a historic deal. Businessman and Dodgers owner Mark Walters acquired the team for a record-breaking $10 billion. It marked the highest price ever paid for a U.S. sports franchise.

As part of the deal, the Buss family remained as part of the ownership group, but they only held onto 15 percent. Joey and Jesse will continue to have their stake despite the news of their firing.

Walter also agreed at the time of the sale to keep Jeanie as the Lakers’ controlling governor. ESPN reported at the time that this was the plan for “at least a number of years.” However, there is no question that a move like this makes you wonder if Walter has more drastic changes up his sleeve. If one thing is for sure, new ownership almost always comes with a sizeable house cleaning, so this feels like it could be only the beginning for the Lakers.

In the meantime, the franchise continues to reap the benefits of last season’s Luka Doncic trade. They are 11-4 to start the year, which is good enough for fourth in a very competitive Western Conference. LeBron James also made his season debut earlier this week, officially giving them their full superstar duo.
