International condemnations of Netanyahu’s entry into southern Syria ...Syria

News by : (ُEnabbaladi) -

International reactions condemning the entry of an Israeli delegation into the occupied Syrian territories continued, with fresh calls to return to the 1974 agreement.

Qatar on Thursday, 20 November, condemned the entry of the Israeli prime minister and several ministers and officials from his government into the occupied Syrian territories, in a statement published by the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs on its official website.

The Foreign Ministry considered Netanyahu’s entry into southern Syria “a blatant encroachment on Syria’s sovereignty, a flagrant violation of international law, and a serious threat to regional security.”

The ministry called on the international community to take urgent action to compel the Israeli occupation to comply with the resolutions of international legitimacy, in particular the ceasefire agreement signed in 1974, and to stop its “repeated aggressions on Syrian territory, to prevent further escalation and tension in the region.”

Jordan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates also condemned, on 19 November, the entry of the Israeli delegation into Syrian territory.

The ministry considered Netanyahu’s act “a flagrant violation of Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, a blatant breach of international law, and a dangerous escalation that will only fuel more conflict and tension in the region,” according to the official Jordanian news agency Petra.

The ministry’s spokesperson, Fuad al-Majali, stressed “the Kingdom’s absolute rejection and strong condemnation of this serious violation, which constitutes an affront to the sovereignty of an Arab state and a dangerous and provocative escalation that is unacceptable.”

He underlined the need to halt all “Israeli measures targeting Syria’s security and stability, which constitute a violation of the UN Charter and Israel’s obligations under the 1974 Disengagement Agreement.”

Al-Majali reaffirmed the Kingdom’s full support and solidarity with Syria, its security, stability, sovereignty, the integrity of its territory, and the safety of its citizens.

He called on the international community to shoulder its legal and moral responsibilities and to compel Israel to stop its “illegal, provocative aggressions against Syria, end its occupation of part of its territory, and respect the rules of international law and the resolutions of international legitimacy.”

Other condemnations

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres condemned the “tour” carried out by Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu in the buffer zone in southern Syria, accompanied by ministers and senior Israeli security officials.

Guterres said, “This very public visit is worrying, to say the least,” calling on Israel to respect the ceasefire agreement with Syria signed in 1974.

For his part, Algeria’s representative to the Security Council, Amar Bendjama, condemned the ongoing Israeli military operations on Syrian territory, stressing that “the Golan is an integral part of Syrian territory.”

In the same context, Russia’s representative to the Security Council, Vasily Nebenzya, said during a Council session on the situation in Syria that “the territorial integrity of Syria must be the basis of any decisions,” pointing out that “Syria needs broad international solidarity and the lifting of sanctions imposed on it.”

He called on “Israel to abide by the Disengagement Agreement with Syria.”

China’s representative to the Security Council, Fu Cong, said, “We support Syria in its efforts to open a development path that is consistent with its national aspirations,” stressing that “the Golan is occupied land and Israel must withdraw from Syrian territory.”

Syrian condemnation

Syria had already condemned the “illegal visit” made by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and a delegation from his government to southern Syria on 19 November, considering it “a serious violation of Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

The visit represents a new attempt to impose a fait accompli that contradicts the relevant Security Council resolutions and falls within the framework of “occupation” policies aimed at entrenching its aggression and continuing its violations of Syrian territory, according to a statement published by the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates.

The statement stressed that Syria reiterates its “firm” demand for the withdrawal of what it described as “the Israeli occupation” from Syrian territory.

The ministry considered all measures taken by Israel in southern Syria “null and void” and producing no legal effect under international law.

In its statement, the Syrian Foreign Ministry called on the international community to assume its responsibilities, deter the “practices of the occupation,” compel it to withdraw fully from southern Syria, and return to the 1974 Disengagement Agreement.

Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ibrahim Olabi, also stressed that Syria reaffirms its inalienable right to exercise full sovereignty over all its territory and rejects any external interference that threatens civil peace. He renewed Syria’s call on the United Nations and the Security Council to take firm and immediate action to stop Israeli attacks on its territory, ensure they are not repeated, and secure full compliance with the Disengagement Agreement and implementation of the relevant international resolutions.

Who was in the delegation?

The delegation included, alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Israel Katz, Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, and Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir.

Netanyahu said on X, “I visited the Golan Heights area in Syria, received an operational briefing, and met with the fighters who bravely defend Israel every day… I am proud of our fighters.”

The Israeli prime minister attached to his post photos from inside the occupied Syrian territory.
