MIDLAKES, N.Y. — The Midlakes boys volleyball team is gearing up for the state tournament this weekend after a historic win.
“Every time I think about it, a smile, it’s like one of the greatest moments I’ve had so far in my life,” Braxton Wilkes said.
Last Friday, the team secured a spot in the state tournament, a feat that still feels surreal to many.
“The feeling for Friday is so overwhelming because it’s been so many years coaching and just to finally have it happen is incredible,” coach Kyle Salisbury said.
The team was initially trailing two sets to none against Spencerport, a tough rival.
“We were the underdog going into the game,” said Jacob Deckert, senior rightside hitter. “We figured being down two sets, you know, don’t think about losing. Just think about having a good time playing volleyball.”
Salisbury emphasized the importance of focusing on one game at a time.
“You can only do it one game at a time. You weren’t going to be able to think, oh, I need to win two. I need to win three. You just gotta work on this game,” Salisbury said.
Midlakes came back to win the match, marking a significant achievement for the team.
“It’s a statement. I don’t really know how else to say it besides that. It’s insanely hard to do,” said Aiden Bryant, senior outside hitter.
For the first time, the Eagles are heading to the state tournament.
“Just reps. Keep on getting better. Focus. Have good practices,” said Jesse Bennett, junior outside hitter.
The team is taking it one day at a time, hoping for more victories.
“Stay together and stay in the present,” Bryant said. “Seeing us come together, you know, it’s what we really want,” Deckert added.
The Screaming Eagles will compete at Finger Lakes Community College on Saturday for pool play, with the potential to play in the state championship on Sunday at Roberts Wesleyan.
