News by : (NBC Chicago) -

Support is pouring in for a Chicago woman and her 9-year-old son who were attacked by a group of kids in Chicago in a scene that was capture on now-viral video.

The Monday attack on Corshawnda Hatter and her 9-year-old son happened just blocks away from Orville T. Bright Elementary School in the South Deering neighborhood.

According to police, the 33-year-old woman and her 9-year-old son were walking just after 3 p.m. in the 10600 block of South Bensley Avenue when “a group of offenders approached and struck the victims multiple times.”

Hatter said the situation stemmed from bullying at her son’s school.

“I can’t sleep because I wake up in the middle of the night with that vision in my head of my son calling my name to help him and I couldn’t do nothing for him. That really hurt me the most,” she said while speaking outside the school Tuesday morning.

The shocking attack left many looking for ways to support the family.

“It was sad,” said Dyon Brooks, a comedian. “It was sick. I’ve never seen anything like that before.”

Brooks who grew up on Chicago’s West Side donated $5,000 to help the family as they move out of their neighborhood and into a new apartment. He said what happened to them does not represent Chicago.

“Let’s come together Chicago. We’re so much better than this and the way we’re rallying around to get behind her and the family—I think it’s very admirable,” he said. “I’m happy to see us coming together, but I don’t want us to have to come together for just in these types of situations—let’s come together before it even gets this far.”

Another Chicago native, Rapper Lil Zay Osama, who grew up on the city’s South Side, said he wants to bless the family with a holiday getaway.

“I just wanted to get the mom, the son, the daughter like bring them out to LA, Christmas shop with them, take them out to eat,” said Osama. “You know just have conversations with them, you know what I’m saying? So they don’t feel alone. So they know they’re protected.”

Other Chicago residents are also stepping up.

Jaleel Anthony, the founder of Bosses University, said he saw video of the attack on social media and knew he had to do something to help.

“Every year we give back to a family, I said, ‘This is a family we want to give back to this year’ and so we reached out to the family and they’ve been more than accommodating on giving us sizes and their favorite toys and what do they like so we’ve been collecting items for that,” Anthony told NBC Chicago.

Anthony said he reached out to Living Fresh Market in Forest Park to collect donations in store for the family over the next two weeks.

“The father simply said they’re just thankful for the support, but it is a process of healing and a process of just really trying to overcome what they experienced so far,” he said.

Hatter told NBC Chicago her family is possibly moving into their new apartment Thursday. They are overwhelmed by the support.

In the meantime, Chicago police said detectives continue to investigate. No charges have been filed.
