On to Colorado: Kenny Dillingham sidesteps Sam Leavitt transfer rumors ...Middle East

Sport by : (Arizona sports) -

Recent reports about quarterback Sam Leavitt and plans to transfer have set the local Valley media ablaze, but Arizona State coach Kenny Dillingham was not playing any part in stoking that fire on Wednesday.

According to The Athletic’s report, Texas Tech and Miami are two potential landing spots for Leavitt if he decides to depart the Valley.

The coach sidestepped three questions on Leavitt in a matter of 60 seconds, vehemently putting the focus on the Sun Devils (7-3, 5-2 in Big 12) and their next opponent, Colorado.

His style of response was akin to former New England Patriots and current North Carolina coach Bill Belichick — with the exception of “on to Cincinnati” being “on to Colorado” in this case.

“I’m focused on Colorado,” Dillingham said. “I mean, these guys just had I think the best Tuesday, the best Wednesday that they’ve had in practice potentially all year. We came out with a fire about us this week, so I’m excited about this week and trying to play at 60-minute football game.”

With referrals to his team’s practice form and “playing meaningful football” in late November, Dillingham deflected every attempt at picking his brain for what the Leavitt reports are possibly doing to his and the team’s psyche.

Reports say Sam Leavitt planning to transfer from ASU, agent says decision not made

“Are you going to say anything about Sam Leavitt’s situation?”, one reporter asked before Dillingham put the final nail in the coffin for the day with a mix of a laugh and exasperation in the back of his throat.

“I’m focused on Colorado and trying to play our best football game we can possibly play this Saturday,” Dillingham said. “This team still has so much to play for. We’re in the hunt. It’s November and we’re playing meaningful football with two games left.”

The coach is certainly right in regards to being “in the hunt,” as ASU is still alive in the Big 12 title game chase with several tiebreaker scenarios in the balance should it win out. Plus, ASU made its first appearance of the season in the College Football Playoff rankings at No. 25.

The availability of wide receiver Jordyn Tyson is still up in the air this week but the opposing Buffaloes (3-7, 1-6 in Big 12) have displayed a porous defense this season, surrendering the third-most points against per game (30) in the conference. The recent play of tight end Chamon Metayer and receiver Derek Eusebio has been solid patch work for an ASU offense that has also been aided by the legs of quarterback Jeff Sims.

Dillingham said the rumors haven’t been a distraction to any team personnel as they continue to prepare for a game in Boulder and the Territorial Cup against Arizona on Black Friday.

“We’re focused on us,” Dillingham said. “We’re focused on what we’re going to do on base downs. Our guys are competitive. I challenged our guys this week about what is the disconnect preventing us from playing our best football game? … So, we’re trying to create even a practice structure like an emphasis on being able to finish better.”

ASU-Colorado kicks off on Saturday at 6 p.m. and can be listened to on 98.7 and the Arizona Sports app. Watch the game on ESPN2.
