The film legend and activist, who rose to fame in legendary films like Klute, On Golden Pond, Barbarella, and They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?, appeared on a new episode of Michelle Obama’s “The Look” podcast and revealed that when she was younger, she assumed she would die before she made it to her third decade.
Fonda went on to say that the reason she assumed that was her fate was became her mother, Frances Ford Seymour, died by suicide when Jane was 12 years old.
“I’m not addictive, but I thought I was going to die from drugs and loneliness,” Fonda continued. “So the fact that I’m almost 88 is astonishing to me.”

“I wouldn’t go back for anything,” Fonda noted. “I feel more centered, more whole, more complete. I’m very happy single.”
“More importantly, I’m not afraid of dying,” Fonda shared. “The most important thing I did was when I was going to turn 60, and in my mind … this is the beginning of my final act, and I didn’t know how to live it.”
“I watched my dad die with a lot of regrets,” she explained of her father, legendary actor Henry Fonda. “That was an important realization for me, because if you don’t want to die with regrets, then you have to live the last part of your life in such a way that there won’t be any regrets.”
"Forgiveness comes into play, including forgiving myself. That actually has guided me in the last 30 years. I’ve been living to not have regrets," she concluded.
How Fonda Stays So Healthy
“It has to do with how you move, how you carry yourself, your posture,” she told THR. “And you can’t carry yourself well and have good posture if your back isn’t strong. So staying strong and flexible — and I work a lot on balance — this is all critical for staying young. I’m 87, and I’ll tell you what, I was a lot older at 20 than I am at 87, and it has to do with what’s going on in your head. So in some ways, I’m younger today. But it also just makes a huge difference as a performer; walking down a red carpet, for example, you can do it with confidence, because you don’t worry about falling down. It just makes all the difference in the world, and I feel very grateful that I’m able to continue doing it.”
