Just days after opening Jaylon Johnson’s window to return, the Chicago Bears have done the same for Kyler Gordon. Some much-needed secondary help indeed appears to be on the way!
The team revealed on Wednesday that they were designating Kyler Gordon for a return and officially opening his 21-day practice window. Gordon has spent most of the season nursing calf and groin injuries. This news, along with Jaylon Johnson’s designation for a return, is massive for the Bears as they gear up for the most difficult stretch of their schedule.

Adding Kyler Gordon back to the Bears’ secondary, as well as potentially Jaylon Johnson, is a massive upgrade for a unit that’s been treading water all season. Given how shorthanded the unit has been, they’ve done an admirable job holding down the fort. Nashon Wright is second in the NFL with four interceptions, trailing only teammate Kevin Byard. However, he’s certainly had his struggles, too, as has the secondary as a whole.
With better passing attacks coming up on Chicago’s schedule, they’ll need their stars back. Gordon has played in just two games this season, but he made his impact felt in both, especially in the New Orleans game when he recorded a sack. Given his ability to create havoc from the slot, but also play on the outside if need be, adding him and Johnson back to the defense gives Dennis Allen a lot more flexibility in choosing how to deploy his personnel creatively.
I, for one, am excited to see how he decides to use Kyler Gordon and CJ Gardner-Johnson together. Both of those players are so versatile and have to be accounted for at all times. They’re dangerous wherever they line up on the field. Plus, if and when Allen gets his top cover corner back, it really opens up the playbook a lot more, knowing he has a true lockdown corner on the field.
We’re still not exactly sure when Gordon or Jaylon Johnson will return to the game field, but obviously, their practicing is a good sign. We’ll know a little more as the week goes on and we see injury reports from practice. I don’t think we can rule out completely either or both of them playing this Sunday against the Steelers, but I also wouldn’t exactly say that’s a likely scenario. We’ll have injury report updates as usual as they come out for the rest of the week, and keep an eye on Johnson and Gordon’s statuses.
