OAKLAND — A man reportedly sitting on the railroad tracks died Wednesday morning after he was struck by a freight train, the second person to be fatally struck by a train in East Oakland in less than 24 hours, authorities said.

Wednesday’s fatal collision happened around 2:54 a.m. in the area of 60th Avenue and San Leandro Street.
Authorities said initial reports were that a man who has yet to be identified was sitting on the railroad tracks when he was struck by an eastbound Union Pacific freight train.
The man was declared deceased at the scene.
No one on board the train was injured, and it remained on the scene.
Why the man was on the tracks is under investigation.
The other fatality happened around 9:40 a.m. Tuesday near the intersection of 37th Avenue and East 9th Street in the Fruitvale district.
That man, who also has not been officially identified, was hit by an Amtrak train. Initial reports were that he may have been fleeing on foot from a dispute he had with someone else before he was struck and killed instantly.
His death also remains under investigation.
