ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Wilbert Jackson, a seventh grader at the Andrew Langston Middle School in RCSD, is being honored for speaking up after his fellow students were sharing inappropriate photos.

Jackson found himself in a tough situation last spring. He saw students sharing inappropriate photos of themselves in a group chat. He decided to reach out to a teacher for help. Jackson’s teachers say his decision helped the students involved stay safe online.

“I think it’s very important because kids could get hurt like that and different stuff can happen that’s bad,” Jackson said.

Any student in grades K-12 in a Monroe County school is eligible for a nomination. The good deed must have occurred within one year of the nomination. Anyone over 18 years of age can submit a nomination form, including family, friends, school staff, and coaches.

The Rochester Police Department has held the Do the Right Thing awards since 1995. You can learn more about nominating a student here.
