ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Activists rallied in Rochester on Tuesday, demanding the passage of sentencing reform bills.
The proposed legislation aims to expand earned time credits, allow some people to petition for re-sentencing after 10 years, and give judges more discretion in sentencing.
Advocates emphasized the urgency of these reforms following the beating deaths of two inmates by guards at state prisons in the past year.
“The truth is if we want people to transform their lives we need to give them the tools and resources to do so otherwise we’re just setting them aside for a residential experience in a brutal and violent environment and then just hoping for the best when they come home,” said Robert Darrisaw, who was formerly incarcerated.
The New York State Corrections Department declined to comment on the rally, stating it does not comment on pending legislation.
