Week 12 Preview: Bills travel to Houston for Thursday Night Football ...Middle East

News by : (News10NBC) -

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WHEC) – After a bounce-back win on Sunday, the Buffalo Bills travel to Houston on a short week to take on the Houston Texans.

Coming off an ugly 30-13 loss to the struggling Miami Dolphins, Buffalo got back into the win column with a 44-32 shootout victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The game featured nine lead changes and six touchdowns from Josh Allen, lifting the Bills to a 7-3 record.

Just four days later, the Bills will be traveling south to take on the 5-5 Houston Texans, a team that’s won its division each of the last two years, but sits in third place of the AFC South with a 5-5 record as it stands.

Despite early struggles this year, starting the season with three-straight losses, the Texans have bounced back as of late, going 3-1 in their last four games despite starting quarterback and Pro Bowler C.J. Stroud missing the last two games. Stroud is once again expected to be out for Thursday’s contest, with Davis Mills filling in. Mills has completed 60 percent of his passes this year and thrown three touchdowns and one interception in four games.

At 7-3, the Bills still trail the New England Patriots for the AFC East lead. The Bills are 3-1 since their bye week, with all three wins coming against teams above .500. Buffalo looks to hold pace with New England and keep their momentum high with a win on Thursday.

Player to watch: Keon Coleman and Tyrell Shavers

Keon Coleman was a healthy scratch in Sunday’s win over the Bucs. The second-year wideout was late to a team meeting on Friday, prompting head coach Sean McDermott to bench him. This is Coleman’s third time being sidelined for a disciplinary issue (in 2024 for the first quarter against the Jaguars, and against the Patriots this season for the team’s first drive).

On Monday, McDermott said the situation has been addressed and that they’re taking it one day at a time.

“We address the situation [Sunday], we’re now moving forward,” McDermott said. “We’ll take it one day at a time…You grow from it, we can move forward. You don’t grow from it; it’s hard to move forward. So it ultimately becomes about developing trust.”

Well, it looks like Coleman could return to the lineup pretty soon, maybe out of necessity more than anything. On Monday, Curtis Samuel and Mecole Hardman, who were both active on Sunday, did not practice, while Joshua Palmer was limited. There’s a chance that Coleman plays simply because of a numbers game.

In Coleman’s absence, Tyrell Shavers produced the best game he’s had in his three-year career: four catches for 90 yards and a touchdown–all led the team. If that wasn’t enough, Shavers plays special teams and made a key block on Ty Johnson’s first-half touchdown–two things that McDermott noted postgame.

“This has been Shavers’ journey,” McDermott said. “Practice squad then elevated for a game, gets a screen pass takes it to the house, comes back this year, fighting for a roster spot again. Really blue-collar approach. You want me to block, I’ll block. You want me to catch a ball, I’ll catch a ball. No job too small, no job too big either. That’s why he’s such a great teammate.”

The jury is still out on whether Keon will play or not; it may come down to game time, and even then, there’s no guarantee he starts. One fact remains true, however: the Bills need more production out of their wide receiver room. Josh Allen and Sean McDermott probably don’t care who it comes from, so long as it comes from somewhere.

Right now, it looks like Coleman is being challenged for his starting job, and it’s Tyrell Shavers jumping at the opportunity.
