Damascus University is preparing to launch a digital learning platform in the near future as part of its plan to develop higher education and provide modern resources and technologies designed to support students and faculty across its colleges.
Ahed Elias Abu Younes, Damascus University’s Vice President for Scientific Affairs, told Enab Baladi that the university always seeks to keep pace with scientific progress to secure its global academic standing among leading universities.
Abu Younes spoke about a university-run e-platform intended to provide a flexible, interactive academic environment and to “connect the university with its students inside the country and abroad” through an advanced scientific mechanism.
According to the vice president for scientific affairs, the platform aims to facilitate effective academic communication by tapping the expertise of outstanding alumni residing overseas and transferring their knowledge to students, in order to enhance skills and enrich course plans.
Abu Younes told Enab Baladi that interaction on the platform will take place through advanced interactive lectures to ensure a flexible learning environment, which would improve education quality by providing high-quality learning materials, broaden access to the largest possible segment of students, and help bridge gaps caused by shortages of faculty in some specialties by relying on Syrian experts abroad.
She noted that the platform will launch in the coming period, after it was installed on Damascus University’s own servers by the Systems Directorate team and in cooperation with Arab international experts, including Prof. Mohammed Abu Shquier, Director of the E-Learning Center and Computer Center at Jerash University, and engineer Hassan al-Qudah, Deputy Director for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Transformation.
In its first phase, the platform will draw on the expertise of Syrian academics abroad for the benefit of the Faculty of Health Sciences and some common core courses in the scientific colleges, paving the way to digitize curricula for other faculties.
According to the university presidency, the platform will later allow students to attend lectures online, provide comprehensive explanations for standardized course syllabi, and support the practical component in some subjects.
It will also enable hosting lecturers from outside Syria to deliver their classes, contributing to richer educational content and an enhanced teaching and learning experience.
Opening a digital information repository
Damascus University is also working to open an “Information Center and Digital Repository,” located in the former French Library, in the coming period, to provide databases for faculty members and postgraduate students within an advanced interactive environment.
The digital repository, described as a new generation of digital libraries, aims to make the university’s intellectual output accessible, including theses, books, and scientific research.
Earlier, Syria’s Ministry of Administrative Development launched the “WACP” platform, a first-of-its-kind step as the country’s first government platform dedicated to organizing work and institutional communication in a fully integrated digital manner.
These steps raise questions about the feasibility of such projects in a challenging environment, and about the role technology can play in restructuring state institutions, especially in a country like Syria that has suffered devastation and lagged behind the latest digital transformation processes due to nearly 14 years of war.
