Injury Updates, Loud Skating, Message to Rinzel, a Brossoit Appearance, and Other Blackhawks Bullets ...Middle East

The Blackhawks host the Calgary Flames tonight. This could be a trap game for a young Blackhawks team that’s playing incredibly well right now, but will be without their captain for the first time this season. The Hawks have dealt with key players missing time on multiple occasions already this season to varying degrees of success. Hosting a bad team sets up for what should be a strong performance. But beware taking desperate professionals for granted.

The Blackhawks officially placed Nick Foligno on IR on Monday afternoon. Tyler Bertuzzi was not at practice on Monday. Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill said he’s questionable for Tuesday night’s game against the Flames. It’s worth noting that Bertuzzi had a field day against the Flames in the 4-0 win 11 days ago. Blashill said Jason Dickinson is not quite ready to return from IR yet and will not play on Tuesday night with the Flames in town. Blashill also said they do not plan on calling anyone up to fill Foligno’s spot. They’ll roll with seven defensemen again. Since we’re talking about IR, we had a first at Fifth Third Arena on Monday: a Laurent Brossoit appearance! He’s still working his way back into shape and isn’t close to requiring any kind of roster move/decision. But he was on the ice facing shots.

— Charlie Roumeliotis (@CRoumeliotis) November 17, 2025 I asked Frank Nazar about skating with Oliver Moore after the win against the Leafs on over the weekend and again after practice on Monday. One thing he said yesterday that was interesting: apparently Moore is a “loud skater.” Nazar said he can hear when Moore is skating up the ice and it helps know where he is. Moore’s speed has popped since his recall. That line has some terrific chemistry right now. Sam Rinzel was a healthy scratch this weekend, and has seen his role and minutes sliding the wrong direction. Ben Pope wrote about the message to Rinzel from the coaches, and what they’re hoping to see in his return to the lineup. That will probably happen tonight against the Flames.

What's the Blackhawks' advice for Sam Rinzel following his healthy scratch?Do a better job sensing danger."[If] someone’s cheating behind me… I have to make sure I’m behind him."New story: t.co/sHBYi24c3H

— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) November 17, 2025 Blashill again spoke glowingly about how Artyom Levshunov is playing right now. The coaches are encouraging him to attack every inch of the ice, and his instincts are showing. The win against Toronto was his best game in the NHL thus far in his young career. Steven Ellis at Daily Faceoff wrote about five NHL prospects making a strong push to make Canada’s roster for the 2026 World Junior Championship. Among them: Blackhawks prospect John Mustard. Here’s what Ellis wrote about Mustard:

Mustard has relished under the spotlight in his second year at Providence, scoring in each of his first nine games. He’s seemingly getting better with every outing, too. His production has been spectacular, often using his tremendous skating to win battles and create scoring chances. I also like that he plays on the penalty kill for the Friars – something he’d do for Canada if given the call.

The Newmarket, Ontario native has spent his entire junior/college career in the United States. Will that hurt his chances of making Canada’s roster? It probably doesn’t help. But politics aside, Mustard has elevated his game in such a way that has to excite Blackhawks fans. They already have one of the best pipelines in the NHL, and Mustard’s play only helps. I think he’ll have a tough time cracking Canada’s roster, but his stock is absolutely up right now.

— Daily Faceoff (@DailyFaceoff) November 17, 2025 When asked if the Blackhawks have exceeded his expectations — and if the playoffs are now a goal — after the win over Toronto, here’s what Blashill had to say:

“I started the year without any expectations,” Blashill said. “I just didn’t know what to expect. We had a group of guys who I knew were talented, and I thought if we could mature our game, we could become a really good team. If you have talent and you play mature, that equals a lot of success. As we’ve grown, I’ve continued to say, we can be a really good team.”

The Rockford IceHogs signed 24-year-old forward Josh Lopina to a PTO on Monday. Lopina was a fourth-round pick by the Ducks in 2021 but hasn’t seen any NHL action. He was skating with the Savannah Ghost Pirates of the ECHL. Lopina scored 14 goals in 69 games for San Diego in the AHL two years ago. On Monday, the Boston Bruins announced Viktor Arvidsson and Casey Mittelstadt were placed on injured reserve, defenseman Jordan Harris was moved to long-term injured reserve, and they recalled forwards Matej Blumel and Riley Tufte from Providence. Also on Monday, the Flyers traded former Blackhawks defenseman Dennis Gilbert to Ottawa for defenseman Maxence Guenette. The Flyers then announced a one-year, two-way contract for Guenette.
