ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Roberts Wesleyan University men’s and women’s soccer teams have both advanced to the NCAA tournament. The men’s team won the East Coast Conference Championship in penalty kicks, marking their first-ever appearance in the NCAA tournament. The women’s team secured its spot with a 1-0 victory over Mercy.

Mia Tyndell, a sophomore goalie for the women’s team, expressed her excitement after the NCAA DII selection show. “Like we actually did it. We made it here. And just seeing our name on the screen there, I think it just shows all the hard work that we’ve put in this season and how it’s like really paying off,” Tyndell said.

Jack Hopson, a senior midfielder, shared his enthusiasm. “Gave me that buzz. Gave me a real buzz, obviously. We were still thinking about the win. So now to hear our name go through and to see where we’re playing and who we’re playing, I know I’ve got a buzz, and I can’t wait to start training,” Hopson said.

Men’s head coach Scott Reber emphasized the significance as the men punch their ticket for the first time. “Yeah. It’s great, right? I’ve been texting a lot of alumni, as you would imagine. We’re standing on their shoulders. They helped pave the way and set the tone and get this program set in the right direction,” Reber said.

Bobby McColl, head coach of the women’s team, reflected on the team’s journey. “Just the joy and excitement that the girls have got from playing and then obviously winning the Championship on Sunday, just, the emotion that came with that and yeah, just seeing them get the rewards for all their hard work, and just everything coming together towards that in this season,” McColl said.

“It’s an unreal feeling to be here and making history, especially with the men’s going as well,” Tyndell said.

“Both teams going all the way. Both teams going in Franklin Pierce. You couldn’t ask for a better way to do it. Really,” Hopson said.

Both teams are set to play at Franklin Pierce University on Friday. The men’s team will face Wilmington, while the women’s team will take on conference rival Mercy.
