High Point city councilwoman Amanda Cook was selected by Guilford County Democrats over the weekend to fill the North Carolina House seat vacated by Cecil Brockman. The 41-year-old Brockman resigned from the post in October after being charged with multiple felony sex offenses with a minor.
Cook had made the decision to run for House District 60 before Brockman’s troubles came to light.
Cook worked for more than a decade in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County and Guilford County Schools. More recently, she founded an educational non-profit that promotes leadership and creative instruction for public school educators.
Cook said that education will be a priority for her while serving in Raleigh. In an interview with WFMY, Cook said she would like to see the General Assembly pass a comprehensive state budget this year and provide teachers with salary increases.
Cook has also pledged to focus on healthcare. Gov. Josh Stein has called on legislators to return to Raleigh and approve funding to a shortfall in the state’s Medicaid budget. But Republican state House and Senate leaders rejected Stein’s call for a special session on Medicaid funding this week.
Brockman has said he is not guilty of the charges against him. He was released from jail earlier this month after posting a $250,000 bond. He was ordered to surrender his passport and wear an ankle monitor while living with his mother. His next court appearance is slated for Jan. 16, 2026.
