A school district in Illinois released a statement to the community after a 14-year-old student who had previously been reported missing was found dead, with the school calling the news “heartbreaking” and a suspect charged with murder.
Kylie Toberman, 14, who was reported missing Friday morning, was found dead later that afternoon, KSDK, the NBC affiliate in St. Louis, reported.
In Saturday night Facebook post, Vandalia Community Unit School District #203, in far southwest Illinois, released the following statement about Toberman’s death:
“Dear Families,
‘We are deeply saddened to share that a student in our district has passed away far too soon,’ the message, from Supt. Dr. Jennifer Garrison began. ‘This is heartbreaking news for our school community.
The situation involves an active law enforcement investigation. Out of respect for the family and the investigative process, we will not be sharing additional details at this time. We will coordinate closely with law enforcement and provide updates when appropriate.
We recognize that this news is incredibly difficult for students, staff, and families. Our crisis response team and school counselors will be available on Monday and in the days ahead to offer support.
Please join us in keeping the student’s family and loved ones in your thoughts and prayers during this tragic and painful time. We will lean on one another as we care for our students and each other.”‘
Kylie was reported missing on Friday morning in Vandalia, in Fayette County, approximately 30 miles southwest of Effingham. She was found dead that afternoon, authorities previously said.
According to KDSK, Kylie was found in an RV behind the home she lived in, said Megan Zeller, Kylie’s biological mother, who also identified the girl as Kylie to KSDK.
KSDK reported a suspect Arnold B. Rivera, 43, was arrested in connection with the 14-year-old’s death and was charged with first-degree murder, aggravated criminal sexual assault and concealing a homicidal death.
Rivera has a lengthy criminal past, including charges in 2000 for burglary and criminal sexual abuse of a child between the ages of 9 and 16, KSDK reported. He was scheduled to be arraigned on Monday morning.
The Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigation Zone is leading the investigation, with assistance from the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, the Fayette County Coroner’s Office the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office, the St. Elmo Police Department, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
