Where it could snow as amber cold weather alert issued for parts of UK ...Middle East

News by : (inews) -

An amber cold weather warning has been put in place for parts of the UK this week which could means they could be hit by snow and ice.

The UK Health Security Agency has upgraded a yellow cold weather health alert to amber in parts of the North of England.

The amber alert, which covers the North East, North West, Yorkshire and the Humber, came into effect at 12pm today and will stay in place until 8am on Saturday.

A yellow cold health alert is still in place for the same time period in the East Midlands, West Midlands, South East, South West, East of England and London.

The Met Office has predicted that snow and ice are possible following above-average temperatures this month and Storm Claudia bringing severe flooding to parts of the country.

It comes after the UK recorded its coldest night since March on Saturday when the mercury plummeted to -7°C in Tulloch Bridge in the Highlands.

What is causing the cold weather?

Recent above-average temperatures have been caused by southerly winds.

The mild spells are being replaced by the cold snap as a result of high pressure to the north-west driving a cold northerly flow from the Arctic across the UK.

Met Office deputy chief meteorologist Dan Holley said: “This will bring much colder conditions than of late and, whilst generally drier than recent days, there will also be a risk of wintry hazards, such as snow and ice.

“Couple this with a brisk northerly wind, and there will be a marked wind chill.“This will be a notable change in our weather after a prolonged spell of above-average temperatures.

Widespread frosts are predicted across the UK, with temperatures dipping as low as -7°C in places.

Daytime temperatures are predicted to stay in single figures across the country.

Holley urged people to keep an eye on the forecast in their area as “possible warnings may be issued for snow and ice”.

RAC Breakdown spokesperson Alice Simpson said: “There’s potential for freezing temperatures to make roads hit by heavy rain very slippery with a chance of ice.

“We expect breakdown volumes to be around 10 per cent higher than what’s normal for this time of year, which equates to around 1,000 more people needing our help each day.

“Normal indicators of autumn, like fallen leaves on the road, can also become very hazardous in icy conditions as they create an extra layer between tyres and the road surface, increasing the likelihood of skidding.”

Where is it likely to snow?

Snow is expected to blanket Scotland, Northern Ireland, the North Yorkshire Moors, west Wales and the moors of South West England.

The Met Office believes snow is most likely to fall in these areas on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Between 2cm and 5cm of snow could fall in low-lying areas in the north and east of the country where showers are frequent.

It is also predicted that in hilly parts of Northern Ireland, the North East of England and Scotland, 5cm to 10cm of snow could fall and between 15cm to 20cm could blanket hilly parts of North Eastern England and Scotland.

Met Office forecaster Simon Partridge told The i Paper that it is most likely that sleet and snow could hit hilly areas in north England and Wales plus Scotland on Tuesday.

Partridge told The Independent: “On Tuesday, there is a small area of low pressure that is going to bring in a band of rain, sleet and hill snow.”

A yellow warning for snow, which is expected to affect upland areas, is in place for Angus, Stirling, and Perthshire in Scotland for most of the day on Tuesday.

Snow is expected on hills in these areas that are above 300 metres.

How to cope with the cold snap

The Met office has advised people to use pavements along main roads which are likely to be less slippery if they need to go outside in the wintry conditions.

It also advised people to give themselves the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables.

It said in a statement: “Keep yourself and your family safe when it is icy. Plan to leave the house at least five minutes earlier than normal. Not needing to rush, reduces your risk of accidents, slips, and falls.”

Katherine Crawford, chief executive of Age Scotland, a charity that supports elderly people, urged people to check in on older family, friends and neighbours during periods of extreme weather. She added: “Small gestures such as clearing and salting paths, or offering to collect essentials can make a huge difference – particularly for older people who live alone.

“As the weather turns colder again, older people might find it increasingly difficult to get out and about safely, leading to increased levels of loneliness and isolation.

“Blocked or icy roads and paths can affect someone’s ability to collect shopping and prescriptions, get to doctors’ appointments, visit friends and family, and attend social groups and clubs, without the fear of falling and needing to go to hospital.

“We’d urge everyone to check in on older family, friends and neighbours during periods of extreme weather.”
