UPDATE: The body of the 7-year-old girl who was swept out to sea by a large wave Friday night at Garrapata State Beach was recovered Sunday.
According to a press release from the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, at roughly 1:20 p.m. Sunday, a diver located the body about 100 yards offshore and about half a mile north of the child’s last known location. The diver brought the body to shore and notified State Parks. The Sheriff’s Office confirmed it was the body of the missing child who was initially reported to be 5 years old. Family members later clarified she was 7.

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, along with Monterey County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue, California State Parks, Cal Fire and the U.S. Coast Guard have all been involved with the search according to a press release from the Sheriff’s Office.
On Friday, a beach visitor and an off-duty California State Parks Officer located a family in distress near the water line around 1 p.m. according to the release, as Hu was attempting to rescue his daughter. They both had been pulled away from the shore by a large wave.
The girl’s mother reportedly attempted to reach out to both father and daughter and was also swept into the water. The woman was able to get back to shore on her own. A 2-year-old child also on the scene was unharmed.
The off-duty officer was able to pull the father from the water and immediately began rendering CPR. The mother and father were transported to a local hospital where the father was pronounced dead. The mother was listed in stable condition with mild hypothermia.
