Trump’s split with Maga disciple Taylor Greene shows how dire the situation is ...Middle East

SEATTLE – Nothing hurts harder than a first love turned sour. That is how it must feel for Donald Trump and Marjorie Taylor Greene, once the closest of Maga allies.

For Greene, 51, the Georgia congresswoman who recently compared Trump to Jesus, it came with the realisation he is not going to release the trove of material relating to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, something he promised to do if he was returned to the White House.

Trump, 79, meanwhile, has learned Greene will not sit quietly simply because he tells her to, especially about this.

In a Truth Social post, Trump on Friday said he was ending his endorsement of his fellow Republican as she seeks reelection and called her a “ranting lunatic”.

He added: “All I see ‘Wacky ’Marjorie do is COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN!”

The falling out underscores two things. One is a reminder that Trump will ruthlessly drop any individual or policy if it no longer suits his interests.

The second is that the issue of Epstein, once a member of his Mar-a-Lago club, has become the biggest political crisis so far of his second term, and one he appears unable to to get beyond.

Greene immediately snapped back at Trump on X saying: “I have supported President Trump with too much of my precious time, too much of my own money, and fought harder for him even when almost all other Republicans turned their back and denounced him.”

She added: “But I don’t worship or serve Donald Trump.”

On Saturday, Greene followed up, writing: “It really makes you wonder what is in those files and who and what country is putting so much pressure on him.”

The public split between Greene and the President had been in the works for some time.

She had opposed his support for Ukraine and Israel, calling the war in Gaza a “genocide” of Palestinians, and attacked Republicans for not having a healthcare plan as they stripped apart “Obamacare’, the system passed during the presidency of Barack Obama.

Last week, when asked about the congresswoman, he told reporters she had “lost her way”. “I don’t know what happened to Marjorie, nice woman,” he said.

But Greene’s criticism of Trump, and her siding with the countless victims, is in line with the majority of Americans, 20 per cent of who say the government has handled the issue badly and 77 per cent of which want all the Epstein files released.

Trump has refused to do so and in the eyes of many critics has continued to seek to detract from the issue.

On Friday, he told Attorney General Pam Bondi to appoint a Special Prosecutor to start a fresh investigation, but focused only on Epstein’s alleged links to Democrats.

Among these are former President Bill Clinton, one-time Treasury Secretary Larry Summers and LinkedIn founder and Democratic donor Reid Hoffman. All have denied the allegations against them.

Trump, too, has always denied any wrongdoing in this matter and called the matter a “hoax”.

There was speculation the appointment of a Special Prosecutor was in itself another effort to keep the files hidden from public view.

The House of Representatives is set to vote on a measure to release all the material, but if there is an ongoing investigation into the issue, the Department of Justice may say it cannot do so.

The break-up with Greene followed a tumultuous week in which several thousand files were released by Democrats and Republicans.

While none contained hard evidence proving Trump did something wrong, an email from Epstein to longtime partner Ghislaine Maxwell said he had “spent hours” in his house with one of the victims, Virginia Giuffre.

The White House referred to a 2016 deposition by Giuffre – who took her life earlier this year – in which she said she did not see Trump “have sex with any of the girls”.

“These emails prove absolutely nothing other than the fact that President Trump did nothing wrong,” said White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt.

Even Trump’s critics concede he usually has a great knack for knowing where his followers stand on most issues and declines to stray too far from where they are.

Yet on the subject of Epstein he has been woefully out of touch.

Unless he quickly orders the release of all the materials available, it is hard to see how he going to win back their trust.

With the 2026 mid-terms a year away, that could be fatal for Republican.
