A woman was injured in explosions that rocked the capital, Damascus, on the evening of Friday, 14 November, while the Ministry of Defense said the incident resulted from targeting the Mazzeh 86 neighborhood (a densely populated district in western Damascus) with Katyusha rockets.
The Information and Communication Department at the Ministry of Defense told the state-run SANA news agency that Damascus was subjected to a “treacherous attack” in which two Katyusha rockets, launched from the outskirts of the city toward residential neighborhoods in the Mazzeh area and its surroundings, struck, injuring several civilians and causing material damage at the site.
The Ministry of Defense, in cooperation with the Ministry of Interior, has begun investigating what it described as a “heinous attack” and is working to collect the necessary evidence and determine the path of the rockets and their launch sites, according to the media department.
The ministry said it would not hesitate to pursue those responsible for this “criminal act” and would take deterrent measures against anyone who tampers with the security of the capital and targets the lives and stability of Syrians.
Residents of the Mazzeh 86 neighborhood told Enab Baladi that security forces deployed heavily in the area to determine the circumstances of the incident, with no clear cause of the explosion established so far, and instructions were issued to prevent people from approaching the scene.
Enab Baladi observed road closures in several streets of Mazzeh and a state of alert among ambulance crews.
A military source had earlier told the official SANA agency, in the first comment on the incident, that “the treacherous attack on areas in the capital, Damascus, was carried out with rockets launched from a mobile platform,” noting that the parties behind the targeting and the weapon used remain unknown.
The 86th District in Mazzeh is one of the most densely populated neighborhoods, with a high concentration of informal housing. It is not far from the Mazzeh Villas neighborhood, which hosts security and diplomatic facilities.
Attacks in the Mazzeh area have increased since the start of the Israeli war on Gaza in October 2023, when Israel began assassinating Iranian and Hezbollah leaders inside residential apartments in Syria.
The Mazzeh area has witnessed a number of security and military operations. On 8 October 2024, Israel targeted three apartments in the “14” residential buildings in the Mazzeh neighborhood of Damascus, killing 19 civilians and injuring 11 others.
Israeli aircraft fired three missiles from the direction of the Golan Heights, striking one of the residential and commercial buildings in the Mazzeh neighborhood.
On 2 October 2024, Israel also targeted an apartment in a building in the Mazzeh Villas West neighborhood (an upscale area in western Damascus), killing three people and injuring three others, according to the official Syrian news agency (SANA).
On 1 October 2024, Israeli aircraft carried out an air raid on a site on the outskirts of the Mazzeh Villas West neighborhood, next to the French Park, killing three people and injuring nine others, including journalist Safaa al-Ahmad, in addition to causing material damage.
