This year marks the 40th anniversary of one of the greatest Super Bowl runs and teams in NFL history – the 1985 Chicago Bears. All season long, we’ll go week by week, documenting the Bears‘ dominating run from Week 1 through the Super Bowl XX win in New Orleans.
LAST WEEK: Shuffling Through ’85: Bears Cruise By Lions Behind Dominant Defensive Performance
Week 11: Bears 44, Cowboys 0
This game was a Texas-sized butt kicking.
The Chicago Bears rolled into Dallas undefeated at 10-0 and dominated the Cowboys from start to finish. Starting quarterback Jim McMahon missed yet another game with a shoulder injury, so backup Steve Fuller and the offense relied heavily on the defense and started a little slow. That didn’t matter to Buddy Ryan’s unit, though.
The Monsters of the Midway held Tony Dorsett and the Cowboys rushing attack to just 52 yards on the ground. Dorsett ripped off a 22-yard run on his first carry of the game. For the rest of the game, he totaled just 22 yards.
Chicago’s all-time great defense took the ball away from Dallas five times with four interceptions (two returned for scores) and a fumble recovery. Heck, the offense’s first touchdown of the game made it 24-0. The defense was taking care of the heavy lifting!

— Bleacher Nation Bears (@BN_Bears) November 13, 2025This win was a big one for many reasons. First, it extended the Bears’ winning streak to start the season to 11 games. But also, it was a homecoming game for Mike Ditka, who both played for and coached with legendary Cowboys coach Tom Landry, and Ditka took care of business and then some against his mentor. Also, it was a homecoming for Steve ‘Mongo’ McMichael, who grew up in Texas.
Leading into the game, Cowboys cornerback Everson Walls commented that the Bears were 10-0, but they hadn’t played anyone. Those comments struck a chord with the likes of Gary Fencik, Dan Hampton, and the rest of the ’85 Bears defense, who took the game personally.
If the rest of the league wasn’t quite buying into the hype around the Bears headed into this game, they sure as heck were put on notice after it was over.
