Laure Melo dropped a national history-making 400 IM at the 56th Annual Buenos Aires Swim Tournament. The 23-year-old Colombian posted a 4:48.91 in the short course meet to break the country’s oldest national record.
Prior to the meet, which took place last weekend in Argentina’s capital city, Colombia’s national record stood at 4:56.66. It belonged to breaststroker Isabella Ceballos, who registered the time at the 1995 Short Course World Championships in Rio De Janeiro.
Splits for Melo’s outing, which represents a whopping 2.6% improvement from the previous Colombian record, were not publicly available at the time of publication. A non-exhaustive results page from the meet can be found here.
For Melo, it only seemed like a matter of time until the record became hers. She already holds the national mark in the long course 400 IM at 4:51.43 from Colombia’s open national championships in the summer of 2024.
Now though, Melo can officially say she ousted the last 20th century women’s record off her home country’s books. In fact, every Colombian women’s record now comes from the post-supersuit era. This is almost true for the men’s records as well. The only pre-2010 mark that still holds is the short course 1500, belonging to Alejandro Bermudez from 1995.

Still on Colombia’s 2025 swimming calendar are the Bolivarian Games at the end of the month in Lima, Peru. At the beginning of December, the city of Medellin will host National Interclub Championships.
