NWS: Strong winds, heavy rain expected this week ...Middle East

News by : (Ukiah Daily Journal) -

Storms this week are expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds to Mendocino County, the National Weather Service reported.

“A High Wind Warning has been issued for the Mendocino Coast very late Wednesday and into Thursday morning as winds seem especially strong for this area,” staff at the Eureka office of the NWS wrote in their Forecast Discussion for Nov. 12, which also explained that a “strong front is bringing rain and strong winds this afternoon through Thursday morning, (with) locally heavy rain expected late in the evening and overnight.”

As for the winds, NWS staff described them as including “gusts of 40-to-50 mph with locally higher gusts at wind prone ridges and coastal headlands.” Wind advisories were issued for both Mendocino and Lake counties, as well as the coastal counties to the north: Humboldt, Trinity and Del Norte.

“The models show the strongest winds generally remaining near or just off the coast,” noted the NWS staff. “However, some of the stronger winds are expected to make it onshore, mainly for the ridges and exposed coastal areas.”

As for the expected rain, the NWS describes it as “forecast to begin in the King Range and Mendocino County first. The front will quickly move north, dropping 1 to 2 inches from about Wednesday afternoon through very early Friday. Overall, the axis of heaviest rain has shifted south with the focus on Mendocino County and the King Range. With the changes in position of the system it is also warmer,” resulting in higher snow levels and less potential for “small hail and thunderstorms,” as NWS staff note “there may still be a rumble of thunder or two, but have kept small hail out of the forecast.”

The NWS is expecting drier weather Friday and Saturday and there is a small chance for frost during this time, but with the recent rainfall, the valleys and coastal areas will likely fog up before it can frost.”

Another weather system is then expected on Sunday and Monday, and NWS staff note “there is still a lot of uncertainty on this system, but it looks like it will be weaker than the previous system.”

The NWS forecast for the next few days:

Thursday: Rain, mainly before 1pm, then showers likely after 1pm. High near 62. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible. Friday: A 30 percent chance of rain, mainly before 10am. Mostly sunny, with a high near 63. Saturday: Patchy fog before 10 a.m. Otherwise, mostly sunny, with a high near 69. Sunday: A chance of rain after 10 a.m. Patchy fog before 10am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a high near 62. Monday: A chance of rain. Partly sunny, with a high near 58. Tuesday: Sunny, with a high near 61.
