The second edition of the College Football Playoff Rankings is out! Yet again, several of us couldn’t watch the reveal due to ESPN and YouTube TV’s tone deaf, shortsighted spat. But again, no point in getting into that any further.
The rankings stayed the same at the top this week, but we had some movers outside of the top five, like the Miami Hurricanes. Here’s a look at the latest rankings and a few winners and losers from the latest round of rankings.

On paper, the Miami Hurricanes made a big move up the list this week. They went from 18th overall to 15th overall, and that ranking made them the highest-ranked team in the ACC, projecting them into the 11th spot in the College Football Playoff field. The only problem is, Miami currently sits in seventh place in the ACC and needs a whole lot of help if they want to make the conference title game.
As it currently stands, the five automatic bids in the CFP go to the five highest-ranked conference champions, which means the auto-bids don’t necessarily even have to come from the four “Power Conferences” (ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, SEC). As of now, it’s not inconceivable that SMU (7-3) or Duke (5-4) end up winning the ACC. Both have just one conference loss and are within striking distance of a conference title game slot. If the ACC winner ends up being an 8-4 Duke team or a 9-3 SMU team, it wouldn’t be impossible for a 12-1 James Madison to be ranked higher at the end of the season if they win the Sun Belt.
Miami, as of now, appears to be the only team with a chance to make the playoffs as an at-large team, but that doesn’t look likely at the moment. If the Hurricanes are going to get a playoff bid, they’re going to need quite a bit of help from the teams ahead of them. The good news is, there’s an opportunity for that coming up this weekend.

Two teams that could do Miami a favor on Saturday would be Oklahoma and Texas. We had a lot of upset college football fans last week when the Sooners and Longhorns were both ranked behind Notre Dame as two-loss teams, but as I mentioned last week, it didn’t really matter. Texas and OU will have their chance to make a statement and move up this Saturday with two massive road opportunities.
The Sooners head to Tuscaloosa to take on #4 Alabama, while Texas heads to Athens to play #5 Georgia. Anyone upset that the 10th-ranked Longhorns and the 11th-ranked Sooners aren’t high enough, don’t worry, this weekend will decide their fate. Win, and move into the top ten, or maybe even the top five. Lose, and it’s likely the end of their CFP hopes this season.
My big question is, will a tight loss from either keep them ahead of a team like Miami and still in contention for an at-large bid? I don’t think it should, with as many good one and two-loss teams hanging around, I think a third loss should be the dealbreaker unless some crazy stuff goes down in the season’s final weeks.
