The SEC had 4 teams in the 2025 season’s initial College Football Playoff bracket. They added a fifth on Tuesday night when Texas joined Texas A&M, Alabama, Georgia, and Ole Miss in the CFP’s second rankings release. The Longhorns, following their Week 11 bye, moved up from No. 11 (first out) to No. 10 (last at-large) on Tuesday night.
The Longhorns’ jump came as a result of BYU’s loss to Texas Tech. Now that the 7-2 Longhorns are in the bracket, ESPN’s Heather Dinich thinks they are almost guaranteed to make the CFP.
“Texas is now safe. There’s your 2-loss team that’s the most interesting for 2 reasons,” Dinich said. “One, they’re in that 10 spot, which is the safest place to be [for the current 2-loss teams], but 2, because no team in the country has a better chance to impress the selection committee.”
Dinich pointed to the Longhorns’ upcoming matchups with No. 5 Georgia this weekend and No. 3 Texas A&M to end the regular season as a “double-edged sword.”
Win both of those games, and Texas will likely host a first-round CFP contest. Lose both, and Steve Sarkisian’s team will miss the event entirely. But a victory over just one top-5 school could earn them a berth, meaning no “bubble” team has a clearer path to sealing their bid.
The Longhorns and Bulldogs will kick off at 7:30 p.m. E.T. (ABC) on Saturday night.
