Finally saw ‘Weapons,’ and I thought it was an incredibly enjoyable watch. All the more enjoyable, I suspect, because I was lucky enough to have avoided any spoilers. Went in to it knowing almost nothing, and that made the payoffs so much better.
Kyle Hendricks is officially retired, which we knew was coming based on the reports, but the finality of which – without even a whiff of pomp – is still a little jarring. Then again, is it really a surprise that Kyle Hendricks is keeping it low key in his retirement?Kyle Hendricks’ competitiveness and resourceful approach to pitching made him a World Series winner, an ERA champion and a longtime favorite among @Cubs fans. — Patrick Mooney (@PJ_Mooney) November 11, 2025 As for next steps, the Mooney article indicates there aren’t any, at least as far as baseball is concerned: “Though Hendricks could be a valuable resource for a front office or a coaching staff with his resume — an Ivy League degree, a 12-year career in the majors and an excellent reputation in the game — league sources indicated he’s not looking to make that transition. Hendricks, who will turn 36 next month, wants to spend time at home with his family and enjoy his private life.” Hendricks has certainly earned the right to do – or not do – absolutely anything from here, so if he wants now to spend time with his family and just be a private citizen, so to speak, then I wish him nothing but the best. If, however, there ever comes a day that he wants to return to the game and be a coach or an executive, I really hope the Cubs are that first phone call. In the meantime, I would still expect some kind of celebration at Wrigley Field next season. Kyle Hendricks was one of the most important pitchers during one of the most important eras of Cubs baseball. We have to have a day to honor him at the ballpark, no? Pat Murphy won the NL Manager of the Year Award again this year, about which I have no beef. The Brewers were the best team in baseball, and Murphy played no small part in getting the most out of his roster. Craig Counsell received 10 total second and third place votes, which I also think was pretty fair – you can only manage the roster you’re given, and I think Counsell did an exceptional job this year dealing with injuries and managing his pitching staff. Just a stray thought: A lot of the disconnect nationally on Cade Horton seems to be the lack of strikeouts on the season, but Cubs fans actually watched him get better and better. He had a 26.0% K rate (4.7% BB rate) over his final 9 starts! That was actually quite excellent! And that’s the guy we believe he can be, and why we all seem to be so much higher on him than some of the analytical national folks. It’s just a preliminary meeting with no negotiating yet, but this still feels like a good start nearly 13 months out:Sources: MLB and the MLBPA met for a preliminary meeting on labor with expiration of CBA a little more than a year away.
