‘Paranoid’ Starmer’s leadership under threat – as PM’s aides turn on Wes Streeting ...Middle East

News by : (inews) -

Sir Keir Starmer was accused of “extraordinary paranoia” on Tuesday night as his aides launched a briefing war against Health Secretary Wes Streeting over the Prime Minister’s future in Downing Street.

After an exclusive report in The i Paper revealed fresh plotting against Starmer, he is believed to be under threat of a leadership challenge from his backbenchers if the Budget later this month doesn’t shift public opinion.

“No 10 has gone absolutely mad after the report at the weekend,” a Labour source said.

“The idea that Wes is briefing says more about No 10 than Wes. No 10 is in full bunker mode.

“This is extraordinary paranoia was more fitting to the end of Gordon Brown’s premiership than a current prime minister,” the source added.

Starmer is preparing to face a threat to his leadership from within the Labour party. Some within Labour think the threat could be imminent after the Budget later this month, while others think after May’s elections in Cardiff, Edinburgh and in England might be better.

The end of Sir Tony Blair’s premiership were dogged with rumours about the manoeuvres by his obvious successor Gordon Brown. Brown, unlike the current Cabinet, did not face any serious challengers.

Labour MPs have been privately discussing the possibility of replacing Starmer for some weeks, with Streeting or Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood mentioned as potential successors. Environment Secretary Ed Miliband is also being talked up as a potential successor.

On Tuesday night the threat of a challenge spilt out into the public arena. It comes after claims first made in The i Paper over a month ago that any move could happen in a matter of weeks, following the Budget.

Downing Street was forced to brief that the PM would fight any push to oust him.

Critics of Starmer said No10 “has gone into full bunker mode, turning on their most loyal cabinet members for absolutely no reason,” a source told The i Paper.

“The list of reasons for people to move after the Budget are growing by the day,” one MP was reported to have said by the BBC, adding: “If Wes is brave and moves he may well be rewarded by being prime minister by Christmas.”
