The i Paper has been shortlisted for three awards at the 2025 Write to End Violence Against Women Awards.

Senior reporter Alannah Francis has been nominated for Best Feature over her piece which discusses a call for the legal age for domestic abuse victims to be lowered from 16 to 12.

For the story she spoke to Micala Trussler, the mother of Holly Newton – who was murdered by her ex when she was aged 15 – after he stalked and used threats of self-harm to emotionally blackmail her.

Columnist Kate Maltby has been nominated in the Best Opinion and Comment category, over her piece about the bravery of Gisèle Pélicot, a French woman who testified against her husband after he drugged and raped her for decades.

In her article Maltby said her refusal to be shamed over what happened is “game-changing” and the “trial has become a crucible of modern and ancient fears”.

And our chief reporter Cahal Milmo is up for a Best Investigation gong alongside Mark Wilding, an investigative journalist at Liberty Investigates, for their feature about the risk that rape victims could have their health data and sexual history trawled by a police AI tool that is being trialed in Britain. The pair’s article highlighted concerns that the system risks setting back the way victims of serious offences, including rape, are treated by the criminal justice system.

The awards organised by the End Violence Against Women Coalition (VAWG) celebrate journalism that takes a stand against sensationalism, victim-blaming, myths and stereotypes, and champions responsible reporting.Discussing the shortlist, Andrea Simon, director of VAWG, said: “We cannot understate the media’s role in informing public attitudes, particularly around violence against women. We know that quality reporting and investigations can help shift attitudes, prevent abuse and hold perpetrators and institutions accountable.

“Journalists can be a really important part of our movement to end violence against women and girls. We are delighted to be celebrating those shedding light on these enduring issues and helping reshape the narratives that underpin it.”

Nick McGowan-Lowe, national organiser for the National Union of Journalists, added: “News reporting plays a crucial role in exposing and framing the epidemic of violence against women. As a trade union the National Union of Journalists seeks not just to protect the work of our members, but also to uphold ethical standards in the industry through our Code of Conduct.

“Our members, working in newsrooms across the UK and Ireland, strive to produce the best journalism they can whether it’s by reporting court cases, sensitively interviewing survivors of abuse, or exposing the perpetrators. We are proud to support these awards that recognise responsible reporting in this important area.”
