The high school junior is a two-time Oregon high school champion having twice won the 500 free at the 5A State Championships. Swimming for Canby High School, Taliaferro as first year in 2024, posted the top prelims time in the 500 of 5:10.20, but in finals dropped under the 5:10 barrier for the first time, setting a new personal best of 5:07.13. She also set a personal best in the 100 fly, having nipped under the minute barrier with a prelims time of 59.71 and a finals time of 59.49, a result worthy of the bronze medal. She rounded out her medal haul with a pair of silvers, swimming the fly leg on the medley relay (27.05) and splitting 54.75 on the 400 free relay.
A year later, Taliaferro, switched up her line-up setting a new PB in the 200 IM, going 2:08.29 in prelims. She added just .02 in finals, but the time was still fast enough to defend her 2nd place from prelims and earned her the silver medal. In the 500, she crushed her time from the previous year going 5:02.33 in prelims and then successfully defended her title, setting a new PB of 5:01.88. While her medley relay failed to advance to the final, she earned a second consecutive silver in the 400 free relay, this time leading off in 54.12.
Outside of the high school season Taliaferro represents the Lake Oswego Swim Club. Last winter at the Kevin Perry Senior Invitational in Southern California, she set a new Personal best of 4:29.37 in the 400 IM, placing 13th in prelims, before adding .21 to finish 15th overall. She also set a PB of 10:28.82 and 17.17.48 in the 1000 and 1650 respectively, the latter of which earned her an 8th place finish.
In long course, Taliaferro, this past summer, set new PBs in the 400/800 free as well as the 200 fly and 400 IM at the Sectionals meet in Mt. Hood. She finished 12th in the 400 free, with a new lifetime best of 4:30.35. She better that results in the 800, cutting over 10 seconds off her previous best as she earned a 9th place result with her 9:17.53. Her 200 fly equaled that result as she finished 9th overall with a 2:21.99. A week later at the Futures Championships in Sacramento, Taliaferro, further lowered her PB in the 400, going sub-4:30 for the first time, finishing 27th in finals with a results of 4:28.67. She also set a new PB in the 1500, dropping over 15 seconds to finish 13th overall with a time of 17:53.14.
Best SCY Times:
200 Free – 1:54.92 500 Free – 5:01.88 1000 Free – 10:13.36 1650 Free – 17:12.24 400 IM – 4:29.37While Taliaferro still has close to two years before she takes up residency in Laramie, WY, she will be looking to join a Dave Denniston led program that finished 6th out of 10 teams at last year’s Mountain West Conference Championships. The Cowgirls earned 856 points led by Macey Hansen‘s double wins in the 500 free and 1650 free. In the 500, Hansen, a then first year, set a PB of 4:41.56, winning by over two seconds. In the mile, she again set a PB, going 16:07.75 to win by nearly 20 seconds.
Taliaferro, will likely overlap for one season with the NCAA qualifier Hansen, who finished 62nd in the 500 (4:47.95) and 33rd in the mile (16:16.92). Taliaferro’s best times currently would be a strong addition for Wyoming, as they only advanced three swimmers from prelims into the finals in the 500, with Ellie Fritscher’s 5:01.91 representing 24th place. In the 1650, Taliaferro’s PB of 17:12.24 would have been Wyoming’s 3rd fastest results in the event and would have placed 19th in the timed final. Her PB of 4:29.37 in the 400 IM would have just scrapped into the C-final, as 23th place last year was 4:29.12 and 24th was 4:29.89. Still with two years to drop time, Taliaferro already has the time to impact on the conference level.
