Free Agent CB Asante Samuel Jr. is Reportedly Set to Visit the Bears Today ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

I hope everyone at Halas Hall is on their best behavior on Tuesday because the team reportedly has a special visitor in town.

Free agent cornerback Asante Samuel Jr.’s free agency tour is reportedly set to make a stop in Chicago today. Last week, we discussed Asante Samuel Jr.’s résumé and possible fit with the Chicago Bears when the first reports of his list of upcoming free agency visits emerged. This is an excerpt from our earlier post:

Asante Samuel Jr. is a 26-year-old free-agent cornerback with 50 games of NFL experience under his belt. A second-round pick (47th overall) in the 2021 NFL Draft, Samuel spent the first four years of his pro career with the Los Angeles Chargers. He started 47 games, came up with six interceptions, and was credited with 37 passes defended during his tenure with the Chargers. Samuel also collected 176 tackles (148 solo), 3 tackles-for-loss, and a fumble receovery. If you are a Bears fan of a certain age, you might remember his father — Asante Samuel — was a four-time Pro Bowler, two-time Super Bowl champ, and a key member of the New England Patriots dynasty.

This could be a low-risk, high-reward situation for any team that signs him. And if it is the Bears, it could be huge considering (1) the team’s defensive issues and (2) injuries the squad is dealing with at cornerback.

Considering the Bears’ needs in the defensive backfield, it makes sense why the team is hosting cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. for a visit. With that being said, I am curious about what this visit to Halas Hall will entail.

Asante Samuel Jr.’s is scheduled to visit Halas Hall on Tuesday

Will the Bears put Asante Samuel Jr. through a workout on Tuesday? Are they going to have a quarterback and receivers test him out in some drills? Or will this visit be more of a check-in to gauge interest and vet medicals? Whatever this visit entails, I’m glad Chicago’s front office is kicking the tires here. We know what Samuel looks like when he is healthy. And at age 26, it is fair to presume that Samuel still has plenty of high-quality football left if he is healthy. However, future health isn’t to be presumed — especially when it comes to a player who had spinal fusion in the offseason.

Perhaps this is just an example of the Bears doing their due diligence on a potential low-risk, high-reward free-agent cornerback option. Maybe this is a sign the team wants to bolster its secondary in case cornerbacks Kyler Gordon and Jaylon Johnson don’t come off injured reserve and return to the lineup. Chicago’s intentions are unknown, but it is easy to draw some conclusions rooted in logic and a basic understanding of where this team is right now.

For what it’s worth, Chicago’s front office tried making another move to add a cornerback before the clock struck midnight at the 2025 NFL Trade Deadline. That sticks with me as I write about their possible pursuit of Asante Samuel Jr. as an in-season free-agent addition. The team’s efforts at acquiring New Orleans Saints cornerback Alontae Taylor reportedly came close, but fell apart at the end as the two sides failed to consummate a deal. I wonder if the front office’s interest there is a sign that it will continue to browse the market for cornerback help.

Even after adding cornerback Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, the Bears secondary still needs help. In addition to CJGJ, the Bears’ collection of healthy cornerbacks on the active roster includes Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, Nahshon Wright, Tyrique Stevenson, Nick McCloud, Jaylon Jones, and Josh Blackwell. The practice squad also has cornerbacks Dallis Flowers and Dontae Manning. Do you now understand why the Bears are kicking the tires on Asante Samuel Jr.? I’m not sure they’ll sign him. But the fit is obvious. And it never hurts to check the waiver wire. So stay tuned.
