Chengze Duan, a senior at Sevenoaks School in Kent, England, has made a verbal commitment to the admission process* at Cornell University for 2026-27. At the time of his commitment, he wrote:
“I’m excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my athletic and academic career at Cornell! I’m beyond grateful for all my coaches, teammates, and friends who’ve shaped me into the swimmer I am today. A huge thank you to Coaches Zhang & Lian at Firepower for nearly 11 years of guidance, Coach Karen at Monson for helping me reach new levels this past year, and finally my parents for their endless support and patience. A special thanks to Coach Wes for the incredible opportunity! GO BIG RED!”
Duan trains year-round with RTW Monson Swimming Club. He and his teammate Frederik Find are the duo behind Swim for Tomorrow, a campaign rooted in friendship, endurance and a deep concern for nature. On November 8, 2025, Duan and Find swam 33km each, the equivalent of the crossing of the English Channel from Dover to Cap Gris-Nez, France, for a total of 66km as a team. As of now, they have raised £8,281 of their goal of £10,000 to raise awareness and funds for Rainforest Trust, one of the world’s most impactful conservation organizations.
Duan specializes in free and fly. He earned PBs in the 50 free (23.80), 100 free (52.23), and 50 fly (24.59) at the 2025 Aquatics GB Swimming Championships in April. He logged his best 100 fly time a month earlier at the City of Sheffield Premier Meet.

50 free – 23.80 (20.72) 100 free – 52.23 (45.61) 200 free – 1:59.29 (1:44.58) 50 fly – 24.40 (21.35) 100 fly – 54.65 (47.97)It took 20.12/44.19/1:42.86 in the sprint free events and 49.20 in the 100 fly to score at the 2025 Ivy League Men’s Championships. Duan will join Enzo Balbuena and Jeremy Ting in the Big Red class of 2030.
*Note: A verbal commitment between an Ivy League coach and a prospective student-athlete is not an offer of admission, as only the Admission Office has that authority. The coach can only commit his or her support in the admission process. Ivy League Admission Offices do not issue “Likely Letters” before October 1 of the prospective student-athlete’s senior year of high school. The Likely Letter, while issued after an initial read of the student’s application, is not an offer of admission to the university.
