Syria’s transitional president, Ahmad al-Sharaa, held a meeting at the White House with U.S. President Donald Trump that addressed the agreement with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), U.S. sanctions on Syria, and a security arrangement with Israel.
According to the Syrian presidency, Monday’s talks, on November 10, explored ways to strengthen bilateral relations and expand cooperation across various fields, in addition to discussing a number of regional and international issues of mutual concern.
Attending the talks were Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, along with other officials from both sides.
Al-Shibani described the meeting as constructive in a post on X, noting that it covered all aspects of the Syrian file.
According to the minister, the two sides affirmed support for Syria’s unity, its reconstruction, and the removal of obstacles to its future recovery.
After the meeting, Syria’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Trump and al-Sharaa spoke for over an hour, during which Trump expressed admiration for “the new Syrian leadership and the Syrian people.”
The two sides agreed, according to the ministry, to proceed with implementing the March 10 agreement signed between President Ahmad al-Sharaa and SDF commander Mazloum Abdi.
The American side also affirmed its support, according to the statement, for reaching a security agreement with Israel aimed at bolstering regional stability.
Trump “praised Syria’s successful stewardship of the previous phase and the achievements made,” the ministry said, adding that he affirmed the United States’ readiness to provide the support needed to ensure success in reconstruction and development in the coming phase.
The statement said the U.S. president voiced support for “revival and investment in Syria,” and confirmed a commitment to continue lifting sanctions imposed under the Caesar Act to enhance development opportunities and attract investment.
At Trump’s direction, an expanded working session was held, bringing together Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan to follow up on what was agreed between al-Sharaa and Trump and to establish clear implementation mechanisms.
Al-Sharaa in Washington
Al-Sharaa held a closed-door meeting with President Trump at 11 a.m. Washington time, 7 p.m. in Damascus, on Monday, November 10.
Reuters reported that al-Sharaa arrived at the White House without the customary protocol usually afforded to visiting foreign leaders, entering through a side entrance out of reporters’ view rather than the main West Wing door where cameras are usually positioned.
The U.S. administration described the visit as a “historic step” that would test the possibility of returning Damascus to a diplomatic track after more than a decade of war and isolation, according to Fox News on Monday, November 10.
President Ahmad al-Sharaa arrived in the United States on November 8. This is his second trip to America, following a previous visit to attend the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.
During a meeting with representatives of Syrian organizations in the United States, al-Sharaa said sanctions on Syria are in their final stages and called for continued efforts until they are fully lifted. He described the opportunity before Syrians today as a rare one that should be seized.
Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ibrahim Olabi, said in a November 4 interview with Syrian Alikhbariya that al-Sharaa’s White House visit would be an unprecedented event and a qualitative shift in the diplomatic context.
This is the third meeting between al-Sharaa and Trump, following one in Riyadh hosted by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on May 14, and another in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly on September 25.
