WATCH: This Darnell Wright Block Was My Favorite Play From Week 10 ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

The heroics of quarterback Caleb Williams are top of mind after the Chicago Bears’ Week 10 win against the New York Giants. Contributions from cornerback Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, defensive tackle Gervon Dexter Sr., wide receiver Rome Odunze, and others stand out for different reasons. But my favorite play from Sunday’s win was delivered by right tackle Darnell Wright.

Come for the Caleb Williams throw and the catch by rookie tight end Colston Loveland, but stay for Darnell Wright dismantling Giants edge defender Brian Burns:

Great throw. Tremendous catch. And a whale of a block by Darnell Wright lol pic.twitter.com/hQzKmKyEBF

Darnell Wright continues to shine on the Chicago Bears offensive line

Darnell Wright put Brian Burns’ spin move into operation shut down mode. That is an impressive feat. If you’re unfamiliar with Burns’ game, I understand. After all, who is going out of their way to watch the New York Giants and Carolina Panthers these days? Despite the teams he has been on, Burns has been a baller. He has two Pro Bowl appearances (2021, 2022) under his belt, has averaged 9 sacks, 13 tackles-for-loss, and 19 quarterback hits since the start of the 2019 season, and currently leads the NFL with 11 sacks.

And then there is Darnell Wright, tossing him around and planting him in the Soldier Field turf like it was nothing. It was an amazing moment. But it was just the latest in what has been a breakout season for Chicago’s starting right tackle.

Darnell Wright is in the midst of his best year as a pro. The University of Tennessee product has the 13th best grade among the 76 offensive tackles who qualify for the Pro Football Focus leaderboard. His 71.9 pass-blocking grade is respectable and ranks him 27th among the 77 tackles who have played enough snaps required to be on the leaderboard. And his 85.9 run-blocking grade ranks third among tackles. More than that, Wright is establishing himself as a premier offensive tackle in this league. He plays with an edge, makes key blocks, is steady and reliable, and is an absolute joy to watch every week.

Don’t get me wrong. I love watching Caleb Williams, Rome Odunze, Luther Burden III, Kyle Monangai, D’Andre Swift, Cole Kmet, DJ Moore, Colston Loveland, and others make plays. But there is something that speaks to my soul when I focus my eyes on what Darnell Wright is doing at right tackle. Every week he seems to make a play that makes me go wow. And if he continues making those types of plays at this rate, he is going to be paid handsomely for his efforts.

I don’t want to put the cart ahead of the horse here, but it is already on my radar that the Bears have to make a decision on picking up the fifth-year option on the 2023 first-round pick this upcoming offseason. It won’t go down until May, so it isn’t something that is top of mind right now. However, once that decision is made, we will eventually pivot to discussing the possibility of a Darnell Wright extension. Again, it is far too early to get granular on that front. But after seeing the offensive line market explode this past offseason, it would behoove the Bears to get out in front of it as soon as they can.
