META: Updated Comment Rules, Revamped Team Sections Coming, Extra Headline Widget, More ...Middle East

Hey friends. Mini META update for you today, but something worth getting out there at the start of the week.

Comment Policy Updates

As some of you may have started to notice, comments with profanity aren’t allowed on Bleacher Nation anymore. There are two reasons for that:

First: User Generate Content (i.e. comments) is a liability for us. Specifically, we’ve had multiple advertisers reach out and drop us as partners, specifically citing profane (and often ugly) comments from below our posts. Note, these are not necessarily comments directed at our writers or content, but between you guys and in general. In short, these advertisers don’t want their products/services to be associated with certain words and phrases, and unfortunately, the comment section as a whole (plus a moderator and what I can do) cannot possibly cover it close enough to make a difference. You can call this cynical, but it’s just our reality and I’m trying to be open and honest with you on the state of the site at all times. Second: Now, I didn’t have to change these settings (or made it so aggressive), but frankly, the comment section has gotten more toxic as time has gone on. We do have one moderator now, and I will work to bring on others (just haven’t gotten there yet). But in the meantime, this is how it has to be. Disqus will automatically identify and flag/delete comments that contain profanity and/or are categorized as toxic.

As an aside, I have maintained a current setting that if a post is flagged 3 times, it should not display. I can adjust that down or up, depending on how you guys feel. Let me know in the comments if that should be higher or lower.

A final note: Please stop discussing politics in our comment section when it has nothing to do with the content in the article upon which you are commenting. If we post an article about something political, then, sure, some RELEVANT and CIVIL conversation is permitted (but will still be very closely monitored). If it’s not, it’s just going to be deleted by our mods or me. There are a billion other places you can discuss politics on the internet, it doesn’t have to be here.

Trying to Prioritize Content

On a lesser sour note, I’ve been trying to clean up the home page and category pages to make content easier to discover. For example, on the homepage, I have moved the widget of betting articles all the way to the bottom of the page. I’ve also put the “Chicago Only Headlines” button back in, if you want to head straight to a page that just has Bears, Cubs, Bulls, and Blackhawks articles. I can move that up if people want it somewhere else. Just let me know.

Likewise, on the current category pages (like /Cubs), the “most popular” section has been removed, so it’s a little cleaner.

A slightly bigger change: Immediately following the “SHOW COMMENTS” button that comes after every article, there is now a “More (Category) News” widget with the three most recent articles from the category you are on. Beyond that, I’m looking into making the Taboola Feed filled with more Bleacher Nation content/articles and fewer ads/sponsored content. Takes time though.

New Pages Coming

This is just a tease, but we are in development on revamping our team category pages. In the near future, we will be replacing some ads/confusing content widgets on category pages with new info and pages (i.e. roster, stats, schedule, broadcast schedule, game outcome/scores, etc.).

I’m hopeful that’ll further improve the category pages as a one-stop hub for everything you need. It should also make content easier to discover and, like I said, replace at least one major ad (and possibly others, it just depends).

So keep an eye out for that. I’ll share some early images of the work as soon as I have it.

That’s all! Thanks for checking in.
