The recent closure of youth shelters in Boulder has left the Mathews House’s Loveland-based youth shelter as one of two still open in the state.
The Landing, the name of the Matthews House shelter, opened just eight months ago. Since then, it has provided 2,077 nights of housing to 100 youths and young adults.
As BizWest reported this month, the Boulder nonprofit TGTHR closed the 14-bed The Source and the eight-bed Chase House, facilities designated for use by homeless youths. The organization said that youth who used the facilities “move fluidly throughout the metro region” and find shelter during the daytime at public libraries and at night ride public transit to Denver International Airport, where they blend in with passengers and find a warm place for the night.
Still, the closures leave The Landing in Loveland and a youth shelter in Denver as the only remaining designated youth shelters.
“A couch isn’t a home,” Nicole Armstrong, executive director of The Matthews House, said in a written statement. “Without stable housing, it’s almost impossible for a young person to stay in school, hold a job, or build a future. The Landing gives youth a place to breathe, rest, and rebuild their lives.”
The shelter also provides other services such as helping youth transition to apartments, reconnect with family and pursue higher education.
Demand for services is increasing, Armstrong said. The organization received 704 new referrals — an average of 117 each month. But the organization can handle just 44% of those requests.
“We’re seeing more referrals, more families in crisis, and more youth falling through the cracks,” Armstrong said. “Every day we have to make difficult choices about capacity — and that’s why community support is so vital.”
The Matthews House has launched its annual Rooted in Hope: Growing Together campaign — an end-of-year effort to raise money for housing, family stabilization, and youth services across Northern Colorado.
