The island, the largest of the Balearic archipelago in the cerulean waters of the Mediterranean off the southeastern coast of Spain, has its share of glitz and glamour like its smaller neighbor, Ibiza, to be sure. But there’s more to Mallorca than partying, shopping and great restaurants. Location and Getting There
Despite the long journey, my first views of the island from the airplane, and subsequent experiences during my visit confirmed that it was worth the effort. Once on the ground, it was a quick 15-minute trip by car from Palma de Mallorca Airport to the Marriott Son Antem. As there is no airport shuttle service available via the resort, taxi, Uber or rental car are the best options.

Spacious Villa-style Accommodations
To say the full kitchen was well-appointed is an understatement: full-size refrigerator, oven, microwave and dishwasher, a Nespresso machine (score!) AND drip coffeemaker, all the pots and pans you’d need, and even an immersion blender if you fancied whipping up a batch of gazpacho using local ingredients purchased at the market in Llucmajor’s Placa d'Espanya.
Each villa has a sliding glass door to a small patio, where I spent a chill morning sipping my espresso listening to the sounds of the birds–some of the 300 species on Mallorca, considered a bird-watcher’s paradise.
I was also grateful for the huge whirlpool bathtub in the primary ensuite, located on the second floor. There was an ample second bedroom and full bath with a standup shower on that floor as well. Some villas also have a second-floor balcony (alas, mine did not).
Resort Amenities
A main attraction at the Marriott Son Antem are the two golf courses, where foursomes did not seem deterred by the early-August Mediterranean sun. The East course is less technical than the West, which features more bunkers and water obstacles. A unique feature is the adjoining state-of-the-art circular driving range that accommodates up to 200 players, allowing ample access for those polishing their games. Lessons and junior programs are also available for the many families who come for extended stays.
On our packed agenda, we had little time to hang out poolside but I managed to sneak in a dip in one of the 15 “townhouse pools” dispersed among the villas. The short walk and manageable size made it easy to get in a bit of reading in the sun–and offered a convenient alternative pool experience for families with children than toting toys and such to the larger, more luxurious clubhouse pool. But if you’re interested in the full poolside experience, the indoor-outdoor clubhouse pool has it all–poolside dining (and drinking), whirlpool, kids pool, water features, you name it.
Restaurants and Dining Options
La Terrassa Grill, the resort's only official dining spot, is available for lunch, dinner and poolside eats and beverages. Its menu leans heavily on Spanish and Mediterranean favorites such as Iberian jamon, a type of cured ham; pan de tomate, rustic bread rubbed with tomato and drizzled with olive oil; and white asparagus–but there are also standards like pizza, burgers and other sandwiches to enjoy for a more casual meal.
In addition to a post-travel lunch, my group was treated to an outdoor dinner in an ancient, stone-terraced courtyard and is now used for special occasions such as weddings and parties. The chefs prepared a multi-course dinner featuring the island’s fresh seafood, including an endive salad with grilled langoustine, and traditional paella served two ways—a meatless option studded liberally with an array of eggplant, cauliflower, asparagus and other vegetables, and a beef tenderloin paella for the carnivores in the group. Starters included empanadas and various Spanish cheeses paired with a citrusy cocktail made with hierbas, a liquor native to Mallorca that contains natural fruits, spices and herbs. Wine from some of the 100 vineyards on the island were served with dinner.
Also on the property is the independent restaurant La Finca, housed in a renovated old stone structure that is part of a traditional Mallorcan possessio, or rural estate, that dates back to the 19th century. Its inviting outdoor bar and seating area and rustic interior and wide-ranging Mediterranean and European-focused menu is popular with both guests and locals alike. My Honest Review
During our stay there, I thought immediately of a sun-loving friend who's considering a monthlong stay in Spain sometime next year. Not only would the active, island life suit her perfectly, but the Marriott Club Son Antem's accommodations have everything she would need for an extended stay—including a second bedroom on the chance that a friend might join her (hint, hint).
