What do you love most about Colorado? Is it the snow-capped peaks, the entrepreneurial spirit, or the strong sense of community? That question is at the heart of a new initiative from the University of Colorado (CU), designed to showcase the many ways the university is listening to Coloradans and showing how the university is directly connected to the things we love.

CU has been inviting Coloradans from every corner of the state to share what they love most about where we live, work and play. In response, through the “Dear Colorado” campaign, CU delivers stories and videos sharing how its four campuses are addressing the issues and passions that matter most to Coloradans, from groundbreaking research and health care innovation to climate resilience and economic development.

At its core, “Dear Colorado” is about opening a two-way dialogue, asking Coloradans to speak up about what they care about and responding with stories of real people working on those very things across CU’s campuses as a partner to improve our state’s future.

Helping Small Businesses Thrive

For example, Latrice from Denver expressed her love for Colorado’s small businesses, from the nail salons to the cafes. CU champions the spirit of entrepreneurism, and to prove it, they developed the Rural Colorado Workshop Series through the Leeds School of Business at CU Boulder. This initiative empowers aspiring entrepreneurs and local governments across the state to contribute to economic growth in their communities. The workshops offer pragmatic solutions for success, whether it’s launching a new business or improving an existing one. Participants learn entrepreneurial strategies to address challenges and develop market-ready ideas.

Hosting these interactive certificate courses for residents and business owners across the state has enabled the Leeds School to build meaningful partnerships, extending CU’s reach to every corner of Colorado. Simultaneously, rural communities are gaining the resources and tools they need to become more economically viable and sustainable.

Revolutionizing Agriculture

When asked what she loved about Colorado, Klaire from Grand Junction stated she loves Colorado’s tomatoes, peaches and grapes. Similarly, CU is passionate about local produce and has driven advancements in sustainable farming, as seen with alumni like Max Knight. Leveraging his education at CU Boulder, Max founded Rooted Robotics, a company revolutionizing the agriculture industry while addressing climate challenges through cutting-edge indoor farming methods.

Max’s journey began with HydroBot, a small-scale hydroponic gardening company. Hydroponics, which is growing plants without soil, proved highly efficient but difficult to scale. Those challenges pushed Max to innovate further, culminating in Rooted Robotics, a solution that uses robotics for large-scale vertical farming operations. The company’s goal is to make agriculture more sustainable, ethical and cost-effective, especially in the face of increasing droughts and floods that threaten outdoor farming.

Making an Impact in the Lives of Coloradans

From nurturing systemic resilience to driving sustainability across industries, the stories about CU’s impactful work are abundant. They reflect a systemwide commitment to making a meaningful difference in Coloradans’ lives – where they live and in ways they can see, feel and experience. CU’s four campuses, Boulder, Colorado Springs, Denver and Anschutz, are tackling the big and small issues that shape our state’s well-being, economy and quality of life. By aligning their work with the priorities of Coloradans, CU demonstrates higher education’s ability to be both aspirational and deeply connected to local communities.

“The ‘Dear Colorado’ campaign will enable us to showcase the special qualities of our four campuses, the distinct opportunities and learning environments each offers, and the extraordinary people who make up our campus communities. The campaign will help us spread the word far and wide that CU is Colorado. We love this state,” said CU President, Todd Saliman.

CU invites Colorado residents to explore more inspiring stories at LoveColorado.com and share their own love for the state. The campaign is an energetic blend of heartfelt messages, innovative solutions and profiles of students, researchers, professors and alumni driving change across Colorado. At its heart lies a powerful reminder that when an institution listens closely to its community, extraordinary things can happen.

The timing for a campaign like “Dear Colorado” couldn’t be more fitting. As the state continues to evolve economically, culturally and environmentally, there’s a growing need for institutions that adapt and respond. CU is aiming to meet that need not just through curriculum and research, but also through hands-on experiences, real-world connections and meaningful relationships.

“As Colorado’s university, we embrace our name and are committed to serving the entire state. Simply put, that’s our primary mission. We’re working to show Coloradans that college is for them and their families,” added Saliman.
