ROCHESTER, N.Y. – RMSC provided deaf and hard-of-hearing people with their own tailored experience at the museum on Saturday as part of Deaf Culture Day.

The event was organized in collaboration with RIT’s National Technical Institute for the Deaf to raise awareness for deaf culture in the Rochester community.

“This is a Deaf Culture Day that they host. It is to raise awareness of deaf people in the Rochester community and what deaf people have been doing,” said Elizabeth Ayers, stenographer and senior lecturer at RIT. “So now I work at Strong Hospital, I do echoes, it’s a really cool opportunity to introduce the Rochester community to deaf stenographers and get some hands-on practice doing some stenography stuff.”

Ayers said the event is a great way to make science accessible for everyone. Rochester is home to one of the largest deaf and hard-of-hearing populations in the world.
