Some days, you just don’t have it. My legs are like jello today for whatever reason, and I don’t even want to stand up and walk around. No real explanation – normal workout yesterday, nothing unusual – just how it is. I suppose that’s probably an aging thing, and also probably a part of why it’s much harder for a 35+ year-old player to get up and after it 162 times a year compared to a 25-year-old. Simply more days when you just don’t have it.
With the Chicago Cubs winning the team Gold Glove award, and with most of that defense returning in 2026, here’s hoping that makes for a nice sales pitch to any free agent pitcher out there who is on the fence, deciding among suitors. Getting to pitch in front of this defense has to be a nice bonus, eh? You could argue, by the way, that the Cubs defense is a very small part of the reason Shōta Imanaga might be a less strong fit than a pitcher who gives up fewer homers – balls that leave the park, by definition, never even give your defense a chance to make a play on. Now, dingers are going to hurt no matter what, but Imanaga is a bit of an extreme case, with so much of the damage he allows coming on home runs. Many other pitchers who allow similar damage, give it up in other ways – ways that, in theory, a strong defense might be able to chip away at. I choose to believe this translates to 50-homer power:Cubs 1st round pick Ethan Conrad showing off the athleticism thanks to the Strength & Conditioning teamh/t @biest22 pic.twitter.com/c1LznHaUwf
— Greg Huss (@OutOfTheVines) November 8, 2025 In all seriousness, Ethan Conrad is a big dude, so premium athleticism is all the more valuable. It shows up on defense, on the bases, in adjustments at the plate, and even, yes, in game-usable power. That said, one of the best ways it shows up is in staying on the field. Avoiding injuries, recovering from injuries, etc. I really cannot wait to see what his debut season looks like next year. Michael Soroka, who is definitely a free agent, still shows up on the Cubs’ 40-man roster. Everyone else has been removed. I think it’s funny to imagine the Cubs being like, “No, you’re still ours. Sorry. If we just keep your name on the 40-man online, you can’t go anywhere.” Probably should’ve tried that move with Kyle Tucker. (In all seriousness, it’s just a web oversight, but it’s just such a peculiar one that it makes me chuckle with each day that passes.) Another Triple-A hitting coach is departing the Cubs organization:Man, the Cubs lose another hitting coach in their farm system. Had heard lots of good things about Strickland during his time with the I-Cubs t.co/6EFf7ERAu5
— Greg Huss (@OutOfTheVines) November 8, 2025 As with Rachel Folden, it’s not entirely clear what spurred the departure, but we’ll find out in the coming weeks how the Cubs elect to maneuver their minor league coaches. This is why Dodgers reliever Alex Vesia missed the World Series, and it’s heartbreaking:Gutted for Alex Vesia and his wife. An unimaginable loss. pic.twitter.com/QXtNfeZ0F4
