Troy football defeats Orange in playoffs with boost from Ethan Mundt ...Middle East

FULLERTON — Ethan Mundt had a rushing touchdown, a receiving touchdown and a momentum-changing fumble return for a touchdown to help the Troy football team defeat Orange, 49-27, in a CIF-SS Division 5 first-round playoff game Friday at Fullerton High School.

The Warriors (10-1), who are ranked No. 20 in Orange County, play on the road against undefeated Rio Hondo Prep in the second round Friday, Nov. 14. The Kares (11-0) defeated Thousand Oaks, 50-34, in their first-round game.

Quarterback Mason Mays completed only six passes for the Warriors, but three were for touchdowns. One scoring pass was for 19 yards to Mundt, and he had scoring passes of 80 and 61 yards to Noah Tapia.

The second touchdown pass to Tapia came late in the game and sealed the victory.

“You know, we were coming to this game, thinking it was going to be a shootout,” Mays said. “They’re a good team, they have a lot of good players, but just our resilience, we keep going through thick and thin, that’s our whole team.”

Troy was leading, 21-14, late in the second quarter but the No. 25 Panthers drove into the red zone and were in a position to score the game tying touchdown just before the half.

Orange was also going to receive the second half kickoff.

But Mundt blitzed and knocked the ball out of the hands of quarterback Star Thomas, scooped up the fumble and returned it for an 82-yard touchdown, giving the Warriors a 28-14 lead at the half.

“I got around the guard and strip sacked the quarterback and picked it up and ran,” Mundt said. “It was a pretty cool moment. They were driving and if they scored and get the ball to start the second half, that would have been very detrimental, but the (fumble return) changed the game.”

In the third quarter, Thomas tried to rally the Panthers.

Thomas ran for a 12-yard touchdown run to get his team to within a touchdown and then threw a 49-yard touchdown pass to Dylan Stone.

But the Warriors answered both touchdowns, with a touchdown of their own and took a two-touchdown lead into the final quarter.

Fisher McDonald and Mason Avey also had interceptions for the Warriors.

“You can’t make mistakes like that against a great football team,” Orange coach Robert Pedroza said. “They’re well coached. And we knew that coming in. And we just made too many mistakes to win a CF playoff game.”

Thomas, a sophomore, passed for 299 yards and three touchdowns and finished the season with 3,276 yards passing and 27 touchdowns.

“It was a great season to be back in it and I think we just need the experience of going forward,” Pedroza said. It is a tough to take a loss in the CIF playoffs, but for the kids that are coming back, it’s a great lesson.”
