Students were kept inside across schools in a suburban district Friday amid reports of federal agents in the nearby area.
In a letter sent around 11:45 a.m. Friday to parents of students in the Park Ridge-Niles School District 64, Superintendent Dr. Ben Collins announced that students would be kept inside “during recess, PE, and lunch across the district.”
“I am writing to let you know that we are aware of reports of Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers being in Park Ridge neighborhoods near many of our schools,” Collins said in the letter. “Law enforcement is not allowed to enter a school without a warrant or legal order. We will continue to monitor this situation throughout the day.”
Collins clarified that no arrests were made on school property by federal agents.
Federal agents were seen across the street from Carpenter Elementary School Friday, located at 300 North Hamlin Avenue in Park Ridge, a representative of the school told NBC Chicago.
Carpenter Elementary went on “secure” status, meaning all students were kept inside, and recess was canceled “to keep students safe,” the school’s representative added.
The Park Ridge-Niles District’s decision to keep students inside is one that parallels choices many other schools and districts have made in recent weeks as federal immigration efforts continue in the Chicago-area.
An elementary school in Oak Park entered a soft lockdown in late October when ICE agents were reported to be in the nearby area.
The Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to NBC Chicago’s inquiry.
