ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A Rochester mother reached out to News10NBC about her son’s school bus consistently arriving late to Martin Luther King School No. 9. Declan Stablow from News10NBC visited the bus stop to investigate the issue.
Elizabeth Robinson said her son’s bus is supposed to arrive at 6:50 a.m., but on Friday, it didn’t show up until 7:20 a.m.
“He’s missing a bulk of his classes by his bus being late every day,” Robinson said. “And again, this is not a one-day thing. This is an everyday thing.”
Robinson mentioned that one day the bus was three hours late, causing her son, Jeremiah, to fall further behind in his classes.
“He needs help with math, he needs help with reading, so those are the two classes that he should not be missing,” Robinson said. “And the fact he’s missing them pisses me off.”
Jeremiah has been marked absent whenever he arrives after 7:30 a.m. Robinson received a letter from the principal stating Jeremiah was not in school.
“Every day this boy is going to school late and his principal is sending letters ‘Oh Jeremiah’s not in school’ yeah because his bus is two hours late,” Robinson said.
Robinson said she contacted the Rochester City School District and was informed the delays are due to a bus driver shortage.
News10NBC has been trying to reach the district and First Student for comment since Wednesday. First Student confirmed there is a bus driver shortage but declined to comment on specific routes.
Attempts to contact the district’s chief of communications have gone unanswered.
News10NBC recently spoke with a co-owner of Transpo Bus Services, who said they are also facing a driver shortage and believes it is an industry-wide problem.
