NAIA school Hastings College in Hastings, Nebraska has added three new sports programs, including men’s and women’s swimming & diving. Along with women’s flag football, the three new varsity sports will begin competition in the 2026-2027 academic year.

The swimming & diving teams will practice and compete at the YMCA of Hastings, which is located just two miles from campus. The pool was part of a $21 million renovation to the 90,000 square foot YMCA that re-opened in June 2024. It has an 8-lane pool with a deep end that includes 1-meter diving boards.

“This initiative is a wonderful example of community collaboration,” Clements said. “We are immensely thankful to the YMCA of Hastings. Their partnership is key and allows us to provide a first-class experience for our student-athletes.”

“We are extremely pleased that the Hastings Family YMCA can provide a fantastic facility to support the newest collegiate athletic program at Hastings College,” YMCA of Hastings CEO Troy Stickels said. “Our pool is a valuable community asset, and we are fortunate to be able to share it to make collegiate swimming a reality right here in Hastings.”

Hastings High School Activities Director Tracy Douglas also expressed excitement for the Hastings community as a whole with the addition of swimming and diving.

“Adding swimming at Hastings College opens a great pathway for our local high school swimmers to continue competing at the collegiate level — something that’s been missing in our area for far too long,” Douglas said.

Hastings used to have an on campus pool, but that is now the wrestling room in the Kiewit Building.

Most of Hastings’ sports compete in the Great Plains Athletic Conference, though that conference doesn’t sponsor swimming & diving championships. The other four members of the conference with swimming & diving programs (Dordt, Midland, Morningside, and College of St. Mary women only) compete in the KCAC.

The KCAC will also be home to the newly-formed women’s flag football team, which is part of an explosion of interest ahead of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, where flag football was added for the first time. They are the 13th member of women’s flag football in that conference.

Hastings College was founded in 1882 and is a religious school affiliated with the Presbyterian Church. The 120-acre campus has 40 buildings and offers more than 40 undergraduate majors and pre-professional programs, as well as masters degrees in teaching. Tuition runs around $20,000 per semester, though its students receive an average of $7,500-$10,000 per semester of academic, talent, and need-based scholarships.

the school’s full-time undergraduate enrollment is 954, and according to Federal data, roughly two-thirds of those (631) are varsity athletes.
