Canandaigua businesses face challenges amid boil water advisory ...Middle East

News by : (News10NBC) -

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. — Residents in Canandaigua are advised to boil water for at least 3 minutes before using it for drinking, cooking or brushing teeth due to a water main break at the intersection of West Street and Bristol Street.

The break has been fixed but due to state-required tests, the boil water advisory is still in effect and it’s already led to added costs for local businesses like Beehive Brew Pub.

“You can’t use any fountain soda you can’t use anything that has water in it so you know you’re buying gallons of water to serve normally have that right there on your gun,” said Tracy Sidmore, owner of Beehive Brew Pub.

Sidmore says she’s spent over $100 on supplies like soda and ice.

“You hope to not buy too much but you hope to not run out either,” Sidmore said. “It’s just a daily balance to be like OK. I have to run to the store again we’re out of 7-Up.”

“I feel like I’m a miner now and I have to go in and chip my way into the ice to get any ice to come out,” she added.

Lincoln on Main was gearing up for an election event when the advisory went into effect.

“We did have an event that night so it was just a matter of getting our team on board bringing in a few extra people to get us all the sodas and water and ice that we needed to continue to operate,” said Jon Willis, music manager at Lincoln on Main.

Willis says the advisory is more of a nuisance than anything, but it’s raised some questions around town.

“You know people just get confused they don’t understand they don’t understand exactly like can I wash my hands? I brush my teeth. Can I take a shower with this water? Can I wash my dishes at home?” Willis said.

According to the city, the earliest they can end the boil water advisory is Thursday morning, but officials News10NBC spoke with over the phone were optimistic about that timeline.

The city says the break could’ve contaminated the water system and that’s what they’re testing for right now.

News10NBC also received a statement from Thompson Health in Canandaigua that says while there is no known contamination at the hospital, teams have enacted emergency protocols to ensure safe patient care.
