Kyle Monangai Didn’t Win Player of the Week, But Won’t Go Home Empty Handed ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

In most other weeks, we would spend time banging the table for Kyle Monangai to win the NFC’s Offensive Player of the Week award. However, the award (rightfully) went to teammate Colston Loveland, who is having himself quite the week at Halas Hall as he brings in the hardware. But just because Monangai didn’t win player of the week honors doesn’t mean he is going home empty handed after his Week 9 efforts in the Chicago Bears’ 47-42 win against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 9.

In fact, I’d argue that Kyle Monangai is receiving equally prestigious honors by winning the Angry Runs scepter:

Kyle Monangai Wins Angry Runs Scepter For Week 9 Efforts vs. Bengals

Chicago Bears rookie running back Kyle Monangai had his best game as a pro in Week 9 against the Cincinnati Bengals. The Rutgers product turned his 26 carries into 176 rushing yards. He also added three catches and 22 receiving yards for good measure. Monangai ran with power and force on Sunday. He barreled over and through defenders as he was constantly gaining yards on the ground. The rookie was tough to tackle, let alone slow down And while he wasn’t rewarded with the NFC’s top offensive player honors, getting the Angry Runs scepter is a pretty cool accomplishment.

Let’s take a look at the rookie rushing leaderboard, which features Bears seventh-round pick Kyle Monangai:

Well, well, well … look who is climbing up the rookie rushing leaderboard.

Kyle Monangai’s 362 rushing yards are the fifth-most among rookies. It is a bummer to see players like Cam Skattebo and Omarion Hampton slowed down and taken out of the lineup due to injuries. And it stinks that it took an injury to D’Andre Swift for Monangai to get more touches. However, it is encouraging to see the rookie make the most of the uptick in playing time. I wonder how Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson will handle the backfield workload once Swift gets fully healthy. Frankly, Chicago’s coaching staff should be in no hurry to rush Swift back in the lineup. Based on Monangai’s recent performances, I’d like to see more from the rookie in the coming weeks.

Even when the Bears’ backfield *DOES* get back to full strength, I think we already have an idea of what a split workload could look like with Kyle Monangai and D’Andre Swift splitting carries. In Chicago’s Week 8 win against the New Orleans Saints, Monangai carried the ball 13 times, gained 81 rushing yards, and scored his first career touchdown. Meanwhile, Swift had 19 carries, a game-high 124 rushing yards, and a touchdown. Considering the track record Ben Johnson has from his time with the Detroit Lions when he was spreading the wealth between Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery, I have full confidence in the Bears head coach’s ability to do the same with Monangai and Swift.

In the end, I look forward to seeing more from Kyle Monangai. The rookie runs in an aesthetically pleasing way that feeds my inner meatball. So, of course I want to see more. And even if D’Andre Swift makes it back onto the field for the Bears’ Week 10 game against the New York Giants, I still expect to see more Monangai moving forward.
