ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The family of Kitana Kendrick, a 30-year-old woman killed by a stray bullet, is speaking out as police continue to search for the shooter. Kendrick was shot early Sunday morning in the area of Gothic Street.
“My baby was my princess my mini me and she’s not here anymore,” Nadine Dukes, Kendrick’s mother, said.
News10NBC’s Marsha Augustin spoke with Kendrick’s family, who are heartbroken and in shock while preparing to lay her to rest.
Dukes saw her daughter for the first time since she was killed and released from the morgue.
“My grandmother was in hospice and I received a phone call from her best friend asking if I heard from my daughter and I said no,” Dukes said. She later learned of the shooting and her daughter’s death.
Kendrick was with her boyfriend doing an Uber drop-off when the shooting began. Dukes described her daughter as an amazing friend and loyal daughter. She cherishes their final conversation, where Kendrick inquired about her great-grandmother, who passed away at 11 a.m. that day.
“I have another child at home and honestly he’s the only reason why I am here right now,” Dukes said when asked how she copes.
Adrian Aguinzoni, Kendrick’s aunt, said she’s living a nightmare. “I’m going to wake up and she’s going to be fine. And she will be at the table for Thanksgiving or she’ll show up Christmas morning. This isn’t real,” Aguinzoni said.
The major crimes unit is investigating Kendrick’s death as a homicide and asks anyone with information or video to contact 911.
